It says the Mets were his first choice and they offered the same but didn't want to give up the 11th overall pick. I thought that was protected?

They were supposedly working with MLB because only the top 10 are protected and they should be there except Mark Appel didn't sign with the Pirates and that bumped the Mets out of the top 10. What supposedly got him to the Indians was the 5th vested year
