This line from the article reads like a 6th-grade social studies report:

Violent crime is major issue in South Africa, and many homeowners own guns.

12.7 people per 100 South Africans own guns. 74 people per 100,000 are victims of gun violence.

U.S. 88 people per 100 own guns, 3.6 people per 100,000 are ... usw.

surprising. sounds like the police are fairly certain it was not an accident.

guessing though, if you were a member of the 2% of the population keeping down the rest of the 98% through outright violence and force (as opposed to crappy movies, fast food, cheap beer, and NASCAR like in the US) you'd pack heat too.
