The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed with ace pitcher Adam Wainwright on a five-year contract extension worth $97.5 million, according to FoxSports.com.

Wainwright was set to become a free agent after this season when he will make $12 million under a team option. The right-hander's new deal will begin in 2014, according to the report.

The 31-year-old Wainwright went 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA last season after missing the entire 2011 campaign because of an elbow injury.

Wainwright has spent his entire eight-year career with the Cardinals, going 80-48 with a 3.15 ERA in 214 games, including 151 starts.

Wow...that's significantly more than Sanchez signed for w/the Tigers (5/80MM)...although AW is/has been a veteran "ace" for the Cards ...he is 31 and had missed an entire season due to injury.

Verly's potential price tag and contract extension just keeps looking more and more expen$$$ive....sigh...

$$16.5 MM average per season, through age 37, after this year.

Of course, since MLB SP salaries are likely to continue to soar, by the final year of Wainwright's contract in '19, it "might" be considered a bargain, IF he is still able to post pitching stats ~ his career average, however very unlikely. His '12 1.248 WHIP and almost 4 ERA was a sharp rise from his pre-injury '10 season, which was his best overall. His ERA+ also precipitously dropped from 161 to 97. Only his K/9 were the same @ 8.3

At least it was only 5 years. I hope we can sign JV for 5 years. He'll be 31 next season.
