"The Athletics announced that they have designated Casper Wells for assignment. The move will allow Oakland to reinstate Yoenis Cespedes from the disabled list."

"The well-traveled outfielder cost the A's $100K when they picked him up from the Blue Jays but he wound up making just one start for Oakland."

No acquiring team can send him down b/c Wells is out of options. So he has to remain on the 25 man roster. The Athletics probably would like to keep him as their OF insurance, but he would have to clear waivers first so that he could be sent down to their AAA affiliate...

I wonder if the Tigers are not saying if anything serious with Dirks knee...hopefully there isn't. If so and he goes on the DL, thinking here that Garcia would get the call, and they don't go for Casper. Casper has 'probably' become passed history for Tigers.

thoughts?

One more chance for DD to pick him up and ditch kelly, which he will likely pass on because hes an idiot.

I always liked Casper. Never provided a lot but at least he didn't ever majorly eff something up either. He showed flashes of power while with Seattle, even in that big ass ballpark. Wouldn't mind getting him back, but I doubt it will happen...I think Tui and Garcia are about all we need in terms of right-handed bats in the outfield.

Matt Tuiasosopo (.320/.414/.480/.894) is performing pretty "wells" for the Tigers off the bench, However, Ramon Santiago (.105/.105/.211/.316) and Don Kelly (.136/.240/.182/.422) are not, this despite Donnie's late-inning double yesterday that led to his scoring an insurance run. Neither is Andy Dirks, (.167/.281/.188/.468)who appears to be injury-prone. They are all hitting below, if not FAR below the Mendoza line, but all are at least adequate defensively.

Kelly is least likely to be DFAed, he is Leyland's BFF. There might be an option where the Tigers could attempt to trade both Dirks & Santiago for a bench player who can adequately play the middle of the infield and who can hit at least above the Mendoza line, which neither Andy or Ramon are able to do so far this season. They might have to "sweeten the pot" and add say...Danny Worth (.136/.224/.182./406) (AAA) or Quintin Berry (.216/.289/.295/.584)(AAA) to obtain a utility player who can hit ~.240 or better. (which would still be an vast improvement over what those 4 are batting).

Dealing Dirks and Santiago (plus Worth or Berry if necessary) would open up two spots on the 25 man roster for Wells and the player traded for.

There is probably a good reason that 3 teams have dropped him within the first month of the seaon.

Because hes a bench player that they dont have room for and he has no options left.

Why couldn't the Tigers just go ahead and claim Wells off of waivers, then offer Santiago and/or Dirks in trade? The A's obviously need an extra OFer who can be stashed in the minors, and Dirks has 3 options remaining, Or the Tigers could just send Dirks down to the minors themselves and still claim Casper, and offer to trade Santiago and/or cash for him, which if accepted would also allow them to bring Danny Worth up.
