ITHACA, MI ?

Travis Smith took the opportunity to escape yet another snowstorm in search of the sun.

He found the Demon Deacons.

Smith, the Michigan High School Football Player of the Year, took a recruiting visit to Wake Forest over the weekend. On Monday, the Ithaca senior announced that he decommitted from Toledo and will sign to play quarterback for Wake Forest.

?Anytime you have the opportunity to play at the highest level, you have to take it,? Ithaca football coach and athletic director Terry Hessbrook said. ?Travis will have a chance to play in the ACC, where the national champion came from.

?Not only is he going to one of the top conferences in the country, he?s getting an opportunity to go to one of the top universities in the country.?

Smith, a 6-foot-3 quarterback, led Ithaca to its fourth consecutive Division 6 state title, extending the Yellowjackets? winning streak to 56 games. As the starting quarterback, Smith was 41-0 for the Yellowjackets, throwing for a state-record 104 touchdowns during his career.

During his senior season, Smith threw for 3,278 yards and 42 touchdowns, throwing just seven interceptions.

Smith will play for first-year coach Dave Clawson, who replaces Jim Grobe. Clawson led Bowling Green to the Mid-American Conference championship this season.

?Bowling Green has been on Travis for a long time,? Hessbrook said. ?With Clawson going to Wake Forest, he decided to come back to Travis and see if he was interested.

?Travis was worried about missing a basketball game, but it was postponed Friday anyway, and then we didn?t play Saturday either. He absolutely loved the campus and Wake Forest."

The NCAA official signing date for football letters of intent is Wednesday, Feb. 5.
