Conference standings and Trade deadline

The trade deadline is coming up and the wings have about 5 million dollars to work with to make additions. (http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=DET)

The potential problem i see is there are so few teams out of the race for the playoffs that there will not be that many teams looking to sell. In the west the only teams truly out of the race are Columbus, Edmonton, and maybe the Ducks barring a miraculous run. I dont see Columbus wanting to trade in the division. This leaves the trade market kinda thin in the west.

In the east the standings are just as tight. Im going to call Tampa, Buffalo, Islanders, and Carolina out of it but if they go on a streak it is possible for all but Carolina to be in serious contention for a playoff spot.

What im getting at with all of this is there is going to be a weak market for players at the deadline. I don't want to wings to over pay for an addition that is not that great in the long run. I have all the faith in the world in Holland and i'm sure if he does make a move it will make this team better but i would not be shocked to see the team look exactly like it does now after the deadline.

That being said if there is an addition, i would really like to see another Bertuzzi like addition. In the playoffs the ice seems to get smaller and battles in the corners can decide games. The wings in the past few years have lost a lot of those battles which IMO has been one of the big things keeping them from the cup. I think if the wings add a bigger grinding physical forward it could really help the team down the stretch run. I would also be ok with standing pat and dont forget Eves should be back at some point and time this season it remains to be seen if he can be effective after missing that much time but he does give the team options.

I realize that any sort of speculation here is pointless as the standings will change dramatically and as fans we have no idea what is going on behind the closed doors of the Wings front office but it is still fun to think about. What does anyone else think the wings could add to bring the team over the top?

contracts are prorated for the remainder of the season. at this point, the red wings have ~$17 million to spend this year. taking on a huge contract isnt out of the realm of possibilities. KH has remained pretty confident a deal or two will be reached by the deadline day, not too mention babcock basically calling holland out, something about the general manager providing us with the best team to work with. i forget the exact quote or the link, but khan wrote an article about it on mlive about a month ago.

you are right in the fact that with the parody in the league standings, there are few sellers and a surplus of buyers. wait til anaheim finishes their 14 game road streak which ends the day before the trade deadline, iirc, then see who is on the block. no hurry at this point. joey has proven the need for a backup goaltender isnt atop the list of priority deals to be made. more importantly, a depth/bottom 6 center/PK specialist is needed. the wings are looking to upgrade their d-core, and you may see a deal revolve around brad stuart, since its apparent he wants to go back out west anyway. a PK d-man is atop the list, as DRW PK is ranked 20th in the league, by far our biggest weakness. mule, z, bert, datsyuk, filpulla, and hudler are all producing offensively, so adding the typical proposal of a hemsky or ruotu, would relegate them or possibly hudler to the 3rd line, which may be one of the best in the league, barring cleary's knee injury.

I had heard that 17 million figure last night on the broadcast and got excited.. Thanks to both of you for the great information..
