hamilton talking with rangers - mariners - yankees - redsox

With the loss of ARod and Jeter to injury and perhaps Swisher being signed by another ballclub, I could see the Yankees swooping in and offering Hamilton an obscene one year contract @ say 25+ MM for his services. The Yankees are going to pay the luxury tax penalty for '13 regardless, and they could try to get below the threshold in '14 and offer Hamilton a longer contract for more MM IF he performs well on O & D, while the Yankees would be free of @ least Curtis Granderson whose contract ends after next season. Derek Jeter has a player option with a 3M buyout for '14, but unless he no longer can play the IF due to injury or steep decline, or be a factor offensively whatsoever, they are very likely to make him a career Yankee. ARoid in a perfect Yankee fan world would be forced to retire after next season, b/c he seems to be falling apart physically, maybe due to his use of PEDs while as a Ranger, or so he claims.

The Yankees could use a bat but I don't think they want to be the same Yankees with their high payroll. And it would be a wise decision. Other teams who win titles have a much less payroll. The era of a high payroll gets you better odds to win a WS is over.

Josh/meth Hamilton rumors: Slugger holding out for six- or seven-year deal.

As the article indicates, very few ballclubs, if any, would be willing to risk signing him to that long of a contract, much "less" the annual 20+MM $$$ salary that Hamilton is seeking to go with it, IMO, b/c of his prior substance abuse issues, injury history, and perhaps last season's roller coaster performance on offense and to a somewhat lesser degree, defense.

I would think that the Yankees or Red Sox, besides the Rangers, would be his most likely suitors, prior to last couple of years, but the Red Sox have been burned badly by players of Josh's "ilk" recently, and rid themselves of most by trade to the Dodgers, who have become the Yankees of the West Coast after their lucrative TV broadcast billions deal.

The Yankees are hard to gauge b/c it appears that the ballclub is right on the verge of potentially falling out of contention in the extremely competitive AL East for much if not most of next season, due to injuries, under-performing/declining vets, holes on offense/defense that would need to be otherwise plugged with "internal" options...absent trades or FA signings, and an aging roster.

The pressure must be building in NY to attempt to field a genuine contender (or not) next season, due to their stated desire to get under the luxury cap by '14, which might not be feasable by signing pricey FAs long-term or trading for legit/established all-star types. The Yankees of course, have a newer stadium and they need to strongly contend all season in order to coax Yankees fans' butts into filling their vastly overpriced seats. To sign or not to sign Hamilton is likely perplexing their brass, and even if the Yankees would, he is a huge gamble, since he could soon turn into another ARod type but in the OF, with another millstone of a MM$$ long-term contract.

If the Yankees want to reign atop the AL East again, they might need to sign another SP such as EJax, or Sanchez, as well as veteran positional players such as Pierzynki, Youkilis, and Hamilton. Obtaining a quality SS by trade might also become necessary IF Jeter is found to be physically unable to play the position by the start of next season, despite his claims to the contrary, this while still wearing a walking boot to protect his fractured ankle. Expecting Sabathia, Pettitte, Kuroda, Hughes, and Nova et. al to pitch as well if not better than last season might be unrealistic. Pineda is a big ? after being on the DL all of last season and while recovering from shoulder surgery, he might not be ready to take the mound until sometime after the ASB next season.

Get the feeling they can still win 90 games and miss the playoffs.

youk is deciding on the one year $12 M from yankees or the two year for $18M.
lots of turmoil with the front office cashman and the two sons on getting below the $189M luxury tax threshold.
which is causing the yin and yang over hamilton among any other players they would normally be all in for.

Cano Will Not Give Yankees A Hometown Discount

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/...-a-hometown-discount.html#WRpDkR6YiOFywtaE.99

"He’s not giving them a hometown discount, and they seem to be more interested in keeping their payroll down than winning," said one source while another added: “He knows he’s the best player on the Yankees ... There’s no reason for him not to be paid that way.”

Nope...BUT there is a reason why the Yankees might not, as Robinson has just arrived on the wrong side of age 30, and they might not want to sign him to a Pujols/Fielder-length contract and their corresponding salary of over $200 MM. The Yankees' brass would understand that he could get paid 20MM+ per annum in the FA market, but it is the contract's length that would probably be the sticky issue between the ballclub and Cano's agent Boras.

They would probably not want to lose him to FA in '14, luxury tax cap notwithstanding, but unless the Yankees' brass can negotiate @ most ~a 6 year contract extension @ 20MM+ during '13, they might be wise in attempting to trade him before it is too late and the Yankees find themselves unable to field an AL East contender for most of the upcoming season...especially if they do not sign or trade for any significant upgrades/replacements @ C, RF, 3B, and perhaps DH during the offseason.

They might wait longer on obtaining a quality SS until they find out whether or not Jeter will in fact be able to physically play/field the position, perhaps during ST. They may have enough quality pitching to remain very competitive in the AL East, but at this point, I do not believe that they have enough offense and may also be a bit more lacking in defense, to again be elite contenders in the division.

With possibly the still-recovering Jeter to start the season as FT DH and then ARod likely needing to also DH initially upon his very belated return to the team next season, the need to sign the aging Ibanez has lessened greatly, although he was one of their best players on offense during the previous postseason. Andruw Jones has left for Japan and has signed to play with the Rakuten Golden Eagles on a one-year deal worth 300 million yen, or approximately $3.6 million. Ichiro Suzuki and Nick Swisher remain unsigned, and Eric Chavez has signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees lineup for Opening Day might feature only 2-3 batters who can or are RH, being Teixiera 1B (SH) Nunez or Jeter SS, and Cervelli C. Their roster is currently comprised of an OF that is almost entirely LH batters, with the exception of RFers Melky Mesa who has all of 2 PAs in MLB, and Zoilo Almonte who has zero.

Nothing wrong with keeping the payroll down and winner. All of the other playoff/good teams do it.
