dodgers to sign greinke

So that obscene contract and salary of ~$$24MM per annum for Greinke should loosen up the market a bit for the remainder of the FA SPs. So maybe Sanchez will be next? Should be interesting to see if any ballclub's brass agrees with Anibal for the years and salary that he and his agent are seeking. I read a post on MLBTR that the Dodgers will have a '13 team payroll of over $$$220 MM after signing Zack?!?

ESPN's Jim Bowden has the contract breakdown (on Twitter).
Greinke will receive a $12M signing bonus with a $17MM salary in 2013, $24MM in 2014, $23MM in 2015, $24MM in 2016, $23MM in 2017, and $24MM in 2018.

Los Angeles will become the first ever NL team with a $200MM+ payroll this year and they figure to boast the largest payroll in MLB history. They will also be the first team ever with four players making $20MM+ annually (Greinke, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Matt Kemp).

Will this also make the Dodgers the prohibitive preseason favorite to win the '13 World Series? Maybe, but there obviously are many more moves to be made, FAs to be signed, and possible/potential players to be traded.

that kind of money for a pitcher is fucked up. i hate how fucking ridiculous baseball contracts are getting.

So what Detroit needs to do is sign a big ass TV contract so they have so much money they can sign anyone.

And the guarantees nothing outside of having the biggest cap. Its proven you don't need to spend so much to win games.

What Greinke deal means for Sanchez, Verlander.
from Jason Beck's Tigers blog

The way average/mediocre players have gotten longer and more money contracts this off season, with the tv monies, Verlander might become a $30Million a year Pitcher.

Dombrowski has mentioned the ballclub's desire to make Verlander a Tiger for his entire MLB career. Unless he was to significantly regress or become oft-injured (no matter how unlikely, since he has been a horse on the mound) over the next several years, and/or the local economy in SE MI was to become much worse during the same time, and/or if Mike Ilitch was to pass away, and the franchise was then sold to more tight-fisted owner(s) and/or if MLB was to announce a player lockout during for example '14, ala '94 and demand to negotiate a salary/team-payroll cap with the MLBPA...JV being offered an extension that includes incentives through say age 39...then at least one year @ $$30MM+ is probably very likely.

Anibal Sanchez Could be the next target for the Dodgers.

If the Dodgers are unable to negotiate terms with South Korean native Ryu Hyun-Jin by 5:00 pm EST today, ESPN's Jim Bowden believes the team would then shift their attention to Sanchez, who was considered a distant second to the newly minted Zack Grienke in the race for the top free agent pitcher on the market.

The Dodgers have signed Korean left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu for $36MM over six years prior to the deadline.

Outside his Cy Young season, Greinke is not an ace and is not in the same league as Verlander.

Easily a top 15 pitcher in the game, so yeah, he is an ace.

But no, not the elite level like JV, Price, and Kershaw.

It's a classic "you can't have him signing." Dodgers still have a crap offense.

EDIT: CLAIM RETRACTED 12-13-12 @0918
