Our old and oft-favored target for derision in former Tigers and frequent gas-can (esp. @ CoPa) RP Jason Grilli has signed with the Pirates for two years @ $6.75MM. Back @ the end of April of '08, the Tigers finally gave up after he was being repeatedly torched by hitters while on the mound, and traded him to the Rockies for a nondescript minor-leaguer named Zach Simons, I was pretty sure that his MLB career was all but over with and he was washed up. But obviously after short stints with the Rockies and then the Rangers, and then relegated to toiling in the minors for awhile, Grilli had experienced some success and rediscovered his groove, and pitched himself back into the Major Leagues with the Pirates over the past couple of seasons, where he has posted respectable stats, if not his lowest or highest career numbers in WHIP, Ks, H/9, SO/9, and ERA/ERA+.

"Grilli enjoyed tremendous success in the Pirates' bullpen from 2011-12. He posted a 2.91 ERA with 13.8 K/9, 3.4 BB.9 and a 30.7% ground ball rate in 58 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh this past season and earned $1.1MM. Grilli ranked 33rd on MLBTR's list of top 50 free agents."

While Leyland is managing the Tigers, there would have been a snowballs chance in hell he signed with them after Jim reamed him for what he said about the Tigers after he was gone.
