Will Matthew Stafford be the next Lion great to retire early?
SLR

And why did they just not do this weeks ago? Another fine example of this franchise not making any sense. And yes IMO I would not be surprised one bit if he ends up announcing early retirement after the season is over, such is the way of Lion greats. Barry, Calvin, Stafford. No rings..

So once their jobs were safe they put him on IR. They were going to use him to try and squeak out a win or 2 to save their jobs.

With out luck he'll announce it after the draft. Part of me hope he does, mostly for his health, OL isn't getting any better and partly we need someone new.

Are there jobs safe?

Matt Patricia, Bob Quinn will return to Lions in 2020; Fords have no plans to sell team

No matter what happens over the final two weeks of the Lions? season, both Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn will return in 2020 ? Patricia?s third year as head coach, Quinn?s fifth as GM.

Lions owner Martha Ford, vice chair Sheila Ford Hamp and team president Rod Wood revealed the organization?s decision to a group of reporters Tuesday in a 30-minute sitdown interview, mostly off the record, mere hours after Patricia and Quinn heard the news themselves.

?We expect to be a playoff contender,? Ford said, ?and those are our expectations, which we?ve expressed to both Bob and to Matt.?

Those were the hopes for many headed into 2019, too, both inside and outside the organization. Instead, off a 6-10 finish in Patricia?s first season, the Lions have fallen apart over the season?s second half. They are 3-10-1 this year, and 9-20-1 overall in Patricia?s tenure.

Not surprisingly, then, there has been palpable, growing unrest among the fan base. So much so that firing Patricia at the close of this year ?would have been the popular choice, the popular decision,? Hamp said, ?and we knew that. But as I say, we?re doing what is right for the organization.?

Throughout the lackadaisical performance, this season and last, Patricia has continued to insist there is a plan in action to build the Lions into a legitimate playoff and title threat. There does figure to be a limit to the patience extended him, however. Despite the assurances about their job security that Patricia and Quinn now have, the 2020 season sets up to be a fork in the road for that tandem, and for the organization as a whole.

The Lions will chalk up much of their ?19 failure ? especially down the stretch ? to a lengthy injury list that?s claimed the likes of Matthew Stafford, Da?Shawn Hand and Marvin Jones.

But it doesn?t escape anyone in Detroit that this team finished 9-7 just two seasons ago, nor that Quinn spent the past offseason aggressively pursuing roster upgrades. If the pieces don?t click into place by Year 3, odds are they probably won?t. Next season may not necessarily be a playoff-or-bust situation, but there will be pressure on Patricia and Quinn from the outset. Certainly, anything close to a repeat of this season would force ownership into sweeping changes.

Calls for the Ford family to sell the team outright have increased of late, as it is. At the moment, there is nothing in the works on that front.

?We?ve been approached about interest in buying the team,? Wood said, ?but there?s been no serious discussions, and the Ford family plans to own the team, and there?s plans in place to ensure that happens.?

Thanks I missed that. At this point I rather have Caldwell back.

Quin and Patricia don't know what they are doing. The Lions should fire them now and start over.

I could never work for a boss that has such low expectations. Which is baffling because the FMC is an organization saturated with hubris and it seeps into the Lions’ franchise. They are one and the same in ethos. Appearance over substance.

This is why this organization blows “We expect to be a playoff contender,” Ford said, “and those are our expectations."

Don't expect playoff wins or become a SB contender etc.. Just the playoffs. Sneak in at 9-7 and we'll be happy.

How is this a hate train? The team was 3-4-1 when Matt was healthy. We weren't winning 10 games.

Maybe not but it's always his fault with you and a few others. He is the QB, just one player, not the entire Offense and Defense. But gets most all the blame.

I haven't mentioned a thing about him this season. I know he played well. Last season yeah, he was terrible. Now wanting to trade him or draft another QB isn't hate its "we're not winning with him, try something new kind of thing". Or have insurance. That's all.

fair or not, that's how it is with the QB position. When the team wins the QB is the hero and gets the credit for "leading his team", and when they lose, the QB gets the blame.

Look at Tom Brady. He gets the title of "GOAT" because he has 6 SB titles, but statistically, he isn't the best QB ever...he isn't even the best of this era.
