Every now and then I look on YouTube to see if there is anything new I haven’t seen and these three clips qualify. One thing I notice in old clips is a lot of laterals.

1953 Recap of the Lions season. Every game but one or two regular season and no championship highlights of the title game

1953 NFL title game highlights. The 33 yard TD pass from Layne to Jim Doran was Jim’s only td pass of the season. He was telling Layne all game in the book I am reading about the 50’s Lions that he could beat his man any time. Browns were 11-1. The Lions were 10-2 but Buddy Parker owned the Browns. Browns were favored in this game which was played in Detroit.

Final Score
Detroit 17 Cleveland 16 Final.

One thing about Buddy Parker. He let the players sort of what they wanted with in reason but he went all out to win games. Even preseason games. But by 1957 before the Lions last championship he abruptly resigned saying he had had enough of the Lions players. Wilson took over.

Sadly the a lions were in three title games in a row but lost the 1954 NFL title game to Cleveland. 56-10 at Cleveland. Setting the revenge for 1957. Lions were 9-2-1. Cleveland was 9-3. Lions had won the previous eight matches against the Browns. Lions were 2-3 point favorites win their third title in a row. Sadly I think playing the make up game against Cleveland on December 19th the week before because of a the 1954 World Series hurt as the Lions won that game also in Cleveland 14-10 on late td. Lions were smashed sadly in the title game.

Buddy Parker was 8-0-1 against the browns in all games both regular and preseason. But buddy lost the last tbe east/west game and he still was pissed. Plus they beat them on December 19th only tp lose on December 26th for the NFL title .

When the Team loses, Buddy has a routine that never varies. He flops other ottoman in the living room and pulls out a pocketknife he's been carrying for thirty years. He raises the knife tp his throat and slowly cuts his tie at the knot. Until I hear the material rip, I'm never sure it's the tie, not his throat that he's cutting.

Jane Parker 1954
