Shoot 50% or better inside the arc: Michigan is 7-1 when it shoots better than 44% inside the arc. In losses to UNC, Arizona State, CMU, and Kentucky it shot 44%, 43%, 40% and 39%, respectively. Maryland has a terrific 2-point defense (allowing 44%) and if U-M can?t crack that 2-point defense, then it will probably be a long night. If Michigan is going to shoot that well inside the arc then Hunter Dickinson needs to bring his A-game, which has been left in his locker for the last few weeks. Dickinson is shooting 49% on twos in KenPom Tier A+B games (top 100 opponents), down from 60% last year.
Defensive rebounding: Maryland isn?t a great offensive rebounding team by the numbers, but it has been aggressive on the offensive glass in its best performances. The Terps grabbed at least 40% of their misses in four games this year, including wins over Miami and Saint Louis. Michigan is coming off a dreadful defensive rebounding performance against a bad Central Michigan team. If U-M makes a similar effort on the defensive glass, it won?t win on Sunday.
Game poise: The Terps have five seniors or graduates in their top seven and are one of the most experienced teams in the Big Ten. They understand what it takes to win a college basketball game and how to ride out the highs and lows of a game. Michigan hasn?t figured that out as a unit. The Wolverines tend to get sped up in critical moments, especially their freshmen in Dug McDaniel and Jett Howard. Sticking to the script when things get rocky is something that this team has to learn and it will be hard to beat good teams until they do.
I expect Hunter to give his best effort today. Not because he actually gives a shit about the team, but because of his personal feelings about Maryland not recruiting him hard enough. All about Hunter, all the time. Let's see if ol' soft batch dad bod can live up to his own hype and play a great game today.
