Old Michigan Football footage .

The 1947 season

Michigan and Norte dame keep flop flopping all season between #1 and #2 The Irish after bomb USC 38-7 in their last game we voted number 1 by a large 107 or 25 first place votes. In those does voters voted on large scoring numbers instead of quality of of schedule . Then Michigan crushed USC 49-0 in the Rose Bowl and another vote was taken and the voters could only pick either Michigan or Nd. There were newspaper debates on who was better between Lydall Smith of the Detroit Free press and Jim Costin of the South Bend Tribune.
The results were and Michigan had 226 first place voted to 119. Stats and comparing common opponents favor Michigan.Smith pointed out that each team played Pittsburgh, Northwestern, and USC . With Michigan holding. 39.4 points for to 5.3 against and ND?s was 32.3 to 5.8. Opponents for Michigan were 42-46-5 compared to Nd?s 30-45-6. Only three teams ND played won five games. Michigan had six teams. Costin pointed out that ND never threw the ball once verses usc, and never once used a trick play. Nd took out its starters in the fourth quarter while Michigan did not . Usc players voted 17-5 in favor of Nd. Nd was bigger in the line and Michigan had more speed.
Well who knows .
Michigan ended up winning the AP title in 1948 after Crisler step down and Oosterbaan took over, and between late 1946 to early 1949 Michigan won 25 games in. Row .

Nd and Frank Leahy won AP titles in 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949. Nd lost to Navy in the last game of 1946 but won 22 games in a row if I counted right between its tie games and was 36-0-2 under Leahy between 1946 and the end of 1949.

Anyway here are some clips of 1948 Rose Bowl after the 1947 season.
Enjoy .

Hi Bob, from our conversation explaining how the Musician's Birthdays thread would not open due to too many youtubes maybe try one youtube webvideo of the old UM footage per post. Hope that will work. Good Luck.

Here is one of my favorite games . Before Nebraska joined the Big Ten. The 1986 Feista Bowl . Nebraska was 9-2 and still in the Big Eight . Michigan was 9-1-1 losing at Iowa 12-10, and tying Illinois 3-3 in Campaign. The game started out poorly for Michigan as Nebraska dominated the first half and was up 14-3 at half. Michigan top rated defense woke up and dominated the third quarter outscoring the Cornhuskers 24-0 helped by two fumbles and a blocked punt to take a 27-14 lead going into the 4th. Osborne inserted his backup an and he drove them for a score to cut the lead to 27-21. With over a minute leaft Bo decided a safety was the best play deep in his own territory so that is what he did. But at 27-23 Nebraska started at their own 46. A Michigan Int saved the day. Michigan was not ranked in the preseason poll as they were coming off of Bo’s only .500 season (6-6), and it was his first ten win season since 1980. At 10-1-1 the Harbaugh lead Wolverines finished #2 in the AP poll at seasons end.

NBC broadcast Charles Jones, and Sam Rutigliano.

1964 Michigan 5-1 (7-1)was at Ohio st. 5-0 (7-1) , and this game would decide the Rose Bowl birth. Only loss for each team was psu beating osu in Columbus 27-0, and Michigan lost 21-20 to Purdue at Home committing 5 turnovers .. Penn st had lost four times that season so the loss was shocking for osu. Michigan was ranked 5th, and osu was ranked 7th.
20 mph winds and a 20 degree day. Nothing much really happened . Osu muffs a punt and a few plays later Michigan scores. Osu has a few chances but misssed fg and Michigan’s defense was stout that year pitching three shutout on the year and only giving up 83 points all season while scoring 253. Amazing seven games Michigan held teams to 10 points or under . First big ten title for Michigan since 1950. Team finished 4th in AP poll.

1965 Rose Bowl

Oregon state scored first. Michigan scores the next 34. Final 34-7. Amazing at that time the big ten was I think 15-4 all time out west. At 9-1 Michigan finished 4th in the AP poll the only loss being a 21-20 five turnover game at home to Purdue.

This is a fun one . The 1950 snow bowl game in Columbus. Game was played on Novermber 25th , 1950. The coaches and athlete director talked about postponing the game. Both coaches wanted to cancel it and reschedule. Ftiz Crisler Said if that is the case Michigan would just Forfeit and not reschedule . Osu coach did not want that and the game was played. Osu because of the stupid big ten no repeat rule could not go to the Rose Bowl even though if the beat Michigan they would have the big ten title all alone. Anyway Michigan did not get a first down in the game and still won 9-3 . Michigan was in the midst of 6-0-1 stretch verses osu they started in 1945 and ended in 1951 ..

In the 1951 Rose Bowl 5-3-1 Michigan verses 9-0-1 California. Michigan trailed 6-0 going into the fourth quarter and two td runs by Michigan’s Don Dufek of 1 and 7 yards proved the difference in a 14-6 Michigan victory. Cal finished #4 in the AP poll and Michigan finished #6. There is very limited video I can find on this game

Rose Bowl Both Td’s are right at the beginning of of this clip.

1952 regular season game between #10 Purdue 3-2-2, and 3-0-1 in conference. Ties to psu , and Minnesota, and Losses At ND , and at #1 MSU. Remember MSU and psu are not in the big ten yet. Michigan was ranked #20 and had a rollar coaster season . They started 0-2 getting smacked By #1 MSU at home 27-13 , and losing at tough battle out at Stanford 14-7. Michigan ripped off three big ten wins in a row before losing to #20 Illinois at home 22-13. After smashig Cornell they were 4-3 going into the Purdue game but 3-1 in conference. Winner would still have a shot at the Rose Bowl and the loser espically Michigan would be in a heap of trouble.

1952 Big Ten standings. Wisconsin ended tying Purdue 4-1-1 and they represented the big ten in the Rose Bowl . They were higher ranked so I guess that is why they went over Purdue as the two teams did not play each other in the regular season. They would lose 7-0 to usc in the 1953 Rose Bowl.

Another reason I like this clip is the video of the band and drum major at the beginning. Anyway the Final score was Michigan 21-10, as they kept the Rose Bowl alive for a week . Sadly they were blasted in Columbus the following week to finish 4-2 in conference and 5-4 overall, and not ranked Purdue ended up 4-1-1 in conference and 4-3-2 overall , and ranked #18...MSU ended up #1 at 9-0.

Here is the clip. (How old is Michigan’s Qb lol. Man he looks 30).

1969 Michigan 7-2 vs osu 8-0 at Ann Arbor.
#1 Ohio st was on a 22 game winning streak, and defending national champions. Ohio state was rolling scoring a average 46 points a game as their lowest output for the year was 34 points . They also had a great defense only allowing around 8 to 9 points a game. The wolverines were ranked 12th going into the game at 7-2 with losses to Missouri and at MSU.
Michigan was averaging 36 a game and only allowing 14 a game. Ohio state was a huge 15 point road favorite. This was Bo verses Woody the first game against each other and the Michigan defense was ready as they had 6 interceptions on the day
