2021 MLB Draft Tigers Picks: Draft Jackson Jobe 1.3.

I have a feeling a lot of these college arms they are drafting since rd 3 are going straight to the bullpen. They all seem to have the same scouting report of hard throwing with 1 really good out pitch.

Fun fact: Pacheco is the first high school infielder the Tigers have drafted within the top 40 overall picks since Scott Moore went to Detroit with the eighth overall selection in 2002.

Avila and Plies will tell you drafting all these pitchers they were "just following their board"..but DET system was devoid of pitching ..period..its a failure of the past 5 years and the abject failure of their International Free Agent program.
this is their way of trying to fix it.

Detroit Tiger fans are still fuming over the selection of a relatively unknown pitcher as their #1 pick. Many wanted Rocker who actually was the 10th pick and didn't make it into the top 5. Rocker was inconsistent this year and his speed had dropped.

I sure hope not. You need to draft SP not BP. BP you get from the failed SP.

Taking 4-5 years to identify a good reliever from a poor starter is too late. This team has failed to develop BP arms for as long as I can remember. This is how we end up with a bullpen filled with Buck Farmers and Tyler Alexander's. We need to be more aggressive identifying flawed starters with 2 good pitches and converting them imo

But that's generally what happens.. Farmer was a starter at first, same with Funkhouser, Holland, Cisnero, Soto and just about everyone else. Jimenez went straight to BP.

SP are worth more so its a good idea to see if you can develop as a SP first.

Edit: Mariano Rivera was a SP at first for 5 seasons.

RAPID FIRE.
Totally Tigers

It?s All-Star week! Are you excited? Are our 2 bloggers? That?s the topic for this week?s Rapid Fire. Five questions and only 2 sentences each to make our points.
Let?s get started!
(Per our rules found at the header at the top of the page, comments based upon political, racial, religious and other hot-button topics do not meet the standards for approval. Thus, there will be no discussion of MLB?s decision to move the game. Baseball only, please!).

1. Are you looking forward to tonight?s game?

2. What are your thoughts about the Home Run Derby?

3. What do you think about players who are elected to participate but decide not to attend?

4. How do you feel about the changes MLB has made to the game over the recent years?

5. Which representation of the All-Star Game do you prefer? The old, original system from decades ago, today?s version or would you suggest a newer and different process?

7 players in this years all star game were picked between the 11th-20th round.

Mariano was gonna be good no matter what. He was a very good starter in the minors. Probably would've been a good starter in the majors too, but he was the best relief pitcher ever because they saw the value there. Detroit never does, that's why we end up with these career aaaa starters in our bullpen every year.

What I would like to see them do is use some of these guys that are younger starters in the minor leagues as BP arms. Manning would be a good example of that. It appears that he has 2 good pitches. He would be great in the BP. Let him play up here as a reliever, get better coaching, and if he can develop a 3rd or 4th pitch, move him to a starting role.

My guess is the guy they took as a comp pick (pitcher from TX) will be a reliever. He has a great slider and OK fastball...but that's it. A guy like him could be a really good reliever as soon as next season.

So many good starters in the ML only had 2 good pitches to start. 18 years or 22 year olds generally don't have 3 good pitches. For example Jobe's curveball not quite there yet. But he's young and has lots of time.
