2014 Draft Thread

There's a ton that can change between now and the draft, but I've seen several spots where Taylor Lewan has dropped down into the middle of the first. I could definitely go along with him being the pick. Darqueze Dennard would be solid too. Maybe scoop up a WR in the 2nd and a C (Stork?) in the 3rd.

Why would we draft a LT??? Reiff and Waddle can be our tackles for the next 10 years. I'd much rather go with a guy like Dennard who fills more of a need. I think your other 2 picks (WR and C) are good though.

Lewan being a hot head who makes mental mistakes that hurt his team too often? He would fit in perfectly with the Lions!

If they did that, at least they would have really good depth at OT for awhile, but too many other highly pressing needs, which again means he will definitely be a Lion if he falls to them!

I don't care how bad Stafford has looked the last few games. We're not drafting a QB in the 1st round. We'll get a new OC and see what he can do to make Stafford better. Stafford has the tools to be a very good QB, they're just not being used correctly.

It was sarcasm(somewhat). What's crazy is that our starting corners are hurt, and I think these bench warmers are better than they are. Jonte Green should have a future here imo. The guy sees zero pt during the first 12 or so games, and holds his own when called upon. If Dennard or Olamu are available, I say go for it if it means Chris Houston is not starting anymore.

Reiff and Waddle have been solid, but I'd guess that Lewan will be better than both as a pro. If Lewan is there, he's probably my preference (at least right now). Reiff could slide over to the right side, and Waddle becomes our depth rotation guy instead of Fox. I'd be really happy with an OL of Lewan/Warford/Stork/Sims/Reiff, and I'm sure out QB and RBs would be too.

I'm certainly not gonna bitch if we would up with a really good DB like Dennard either. Hell, even a top notch WR would be acceptable. I don't care too much about the order we grab these guys in, but would could use a DB (or two), WR (or two), C, K, and an OT. I haven't even checked on our FAs yet, but I've been satisfied with our LBs, DL, and RBs. Not saying we couldn't/shouldn't improve them if we get the chance, but I'd feel comfortable rolling with the same core (Tulloch & Levy, Suh/Fairley/Ansah, Bush/Bell/Riddick) next year.

Needs and potential first round fits imo:

WR

Marqise Lee - undersized burner who would stretch the field opposite Calvin

ya right....I heard the exact same thing about titus. Don't need a vertical threat when Stafford only completes less than 20% of hiss passes over 20 yards

Mike Evans - big target, great in traffic

Would be a monster opposite calvin and staff would only overthrow him by 6 inches instead of overthrowing Lee by 12 inches. If we end up in the 12-15 range we might be picking a little high for his value.

Kelvin Benjamin - another huge athletic WR

Him and evans are close in my eyes...Evans plays with an edge and attitude....Benjamin is more reserved and could need more time to develop.

Watkins will be gone...

TE Eric Ebron - People throw around the jimmy graham comparisons with this guy. a match up nightmare who can run an entire route tree and averages 16 yards a catch. That kind of dynamic presense in the middle of the field would be intriguing in this offense. Thought the same thing about bush in the flat and we didn't really take advantage of that this year either...so meh. Good value if were picking around 15.....the need will be dependant on what we do with Pettigrew. at 250 lbs hes bulked up some but is not the inline blocker the like of which Pettigrew is supposed to be.

Corner-

Justin Gilbert- Gilbert, ekpre-olamu and dennard are all pretty close. Then you have the more undersized florida corners in Roberson and purifoy.....it will be an interesting combine to see who rises to the top. For me its the size and physical play of gilbert that sets him apart from the rest of these guys. Value will be there mid first round.

3/4 scheme -

1st round is littered with potential 3/4 substitutes if we end up with a 3/4 coach....this is obviously dependent on us getting a 3/4 coach.

Nix III - your typical 340 lb NT. He will be the first 3/4 NT off the board and 12-15 is a good projection for him

Khalil Mack/Anthony Barr - Barr probably gets the nod as the best 3/4 rush olb and goes top 10. Mack could fall if that's the case into the 10-15 range.

Tuitt/Hageman - prototype 5 technique DEs. At 6'5'' 307 lbs, Hageman is athletic and long...he might have the potential nod over Tuitt. Tuitt probably is the value pick right now for that position if youre drafting at 10-15. That could easily change post combine.

OT -

I put OT here for value purposes...theres a lot of talented tackles that will vie for 1st round status. Lewan, Kouandjio, Moses, Martin, Richardson, greg robinson will all get looks in the 10-32 range with Matthews being the early favorite to go top 10. RT could be a need if the new regime isnt sold on waddle being a bookend RT.

Positional need -

2 picks we could go based on need and not so much value:

Shazier OLB - fast fast fast and can cover....will bring versatility and playmaking to the linebacking corps. he wont need to come off the field on 3rd downs.

Clinton Dix S - was high on him and he probably still is the only projected rd 1 safety....but hes way down my wish list now. Not sold on him....but fills a need of we move on from delmas.

What about center?

Theres some quality centers coming out...the guy from florida state Stork, and the Arkansas C are the two off the top of my head that should fight for top guy off the board. I think I remember seeing something that raiola wants to be back....so that pushes the need back atleast another year. Value wise I think the top 2 centers will have a hard time even getting into day 2 of the draft. Most mocks and value charts ive seen have them somewhere in rds 3-4. Hold off altogether or a mid round developmental guy would be my guess.

I watched that Ebron kid tonight for a bit. He's a monster

I love Watkins but agree he'll be gone.

Im on board with a playmaker on O

Myself I'm not interested in a WR early. Grab a guy with hands in the fourth. We need a CB or LB early.

Good overview Hughes. Becoming the draft guru. First of all lose to the Vikes and believe Watkins will be there. Second of all Barr is going to be a super stud. He'll be gong before Watkins. Third of all if BPA is back in play all those o tackles are monsters and would love any of them. Move Waddle inside and put Sims out to pasture.

no need for a burner to stretch the field if you dont have a QB to get it to him...Id rather go with the WR out of Texas A&M who can catch everything

Routes and hands for the WR. Still don't want one early but I won't go apeshit if that's how we go.

My mock Draft and i did research and we don't have a 5th round pick, jacksonville has it.

1. Darqueze Denaard, CB, MSU
2. Gabe Jackson, OG, Mississippi State- 320lbs maybe move to center and replace Raiola
3. Jackson Jeffcoat, OLB Texas
4. Brandon Coleman, WR Rutgers
5. no pick Jacksonville
6. Chris Boswell, K, Rice
7. Tyler Larsen, C, Utah State

personally i'd like to see them trade down the 2nd round pick and get more picks

picking #10....you can trade down and get Dennard

right how we don't know where we will end up at the end of the day. but i love the idea of trading down and getting more picks with our cap situation

they wont beat new england, but i would trade down from #10 and get another 2nd and 3rd. especially if Manziell is there at 10 and a QB needy team is just below us
