2016 MLB Draft

Not having a 2nd or 3rd round pick, then drafting a HS pitcher proves how dim the Tiger organization is.

1st two rounds HS players by Tigers:

1991 = (1) Justin Thompson
1991 = (1) Trever Miller
1991 = (1) Tarrick Brock OF
1992 = (2) Yuri Sanchez SS
1993 = (1) Matt Brunson SS
1993 = (2) Tony Fuduric
1994 - (2) Mike Darr OF
1997 = (2) Shane Loux
1998 = (1) Nate Cornejo
2000 = (1) Matt Wheatland
2000 = (2) Chad Petty
2002 = (1) Scott Moore SS
2002 = (2) Brett Clevlen OF
2003 = (2) Jay Sborz
2005 = (1) Cameron Maybin OF
2007 = (1) Rick Porcello
2007 = (1) Brandon Hamilton
2009 = (1) Jacob Turner
2010 = (1) Nick Castellanos
2012 = (2) Jake Thompson
2014 = (1) Derek Hill
2015 = (1) Beau Burrows
2016 = (1) Matt Manning

I am sorry, I just feel High School picks at the top of the draft are huge gambles. There isn't anything like "for sure" picks in MLB draft, but certainly HS picks are more uncertain than college players. DET's track record picking a HS player in the first 2 rounds isn't all that great either.

2016 MLB Draft: Kyle Funkhouser, RHP, University of Louisville.

Kyle Funkhouser’s long wait to hear his name called ended when he was picked in the fourth round by the Tigers. Funkhouser was picked 35th overall in last year’s draft by the Dodgers but gambled by returning for his senior season, turning down significant money for a chance to be chosen higher this year. Even with a strong finish to the season, Funkhouser’s inconsistency appears to have cost him. He might win a national title at Louisville, but financially the decision to come back to school has cost him.

At least since 2005 the only terrible pick was Hamilton in 2007. All the rest of the players have or probably will at least make it to the Majors

Derek Hill has been a bust so far, not sure why anyone would think at this point he will make the majors.

Nate Cornejo, Shane Loux, Bett Clevlen, etc, etc all made it to the majors. Very few didn't make the majors. And so far, only Maybin and Procello has had 10+ WAR at the MLB level.

Say what you what about DD but he was light years better than Randy (trade to the padres/astros) Smith.

As another poster said those guys have been pretty respectable since 05 aside from Hamilton and now Hill.

While he had other issues, Smith rarely drafted HS players in the first 2 rounds. It takes 5-7 years to accurately evaluate HS draftees. From 2011 on, it is anyone's "guess".

I agree it's still early on the younger guys..

Comments from Perfect Games Brian Sakowski.

Pegged Manning to the #Tigers several weeks ago. 6'6" RHP, plus athlete, 92-96 w/ 6 sink this spring. Huge upside, great pick for Detroit.

Tigers take Kyle Funkhouser, who has fallen quite a bit. Good value there. RHSP, good FB/SL, velo wavered this spring. Comp rounder last yr.

If Funkhouser's development ends up closer to the "high" he's shown, Tigers got a steal in the 4th round.

Tigers take a more traditional #TigersPick with Mark Ecker. Reliever, very strong arm, touches high 90's, quality changeup, breaker lags.

Tigers take Brian Garcia, Miami's closer. Reliever in college, probably a reliever in pro ball, middle relief-type upside, has 4 pitches.

Tigers take Austin Sodders in round 7. Big lefty, collegiate performer, fringe stuff, has some deception, backend type if it all breaks well.

Tigers take Jacob Robson in the 8th from Miss. St. CF, 70 runner, very good glove at premium position, bat to ball skills, lots of SB potential.

Tigers 9th rounder is a familiar name in UVA's Daniel Pinero. Like 6'5" 215, plays SS relatively well for size, has some juice.

Tigers 14th rounder Austin Athmann, from University of Minnesota. Catcher. Outstanding 2016 season, strong dude, has some juice.

Tigers take Michigan's Evan Hill in the 25th. Long, lanky lefty, 4 year SP, quality arsenal, FB mostly 86-89. Mt. Pleasant native.

Tigers take arguably the best player remaining on the board in Drew Mendoza. I had 1st round grade on him, LH stuck at 3B w/ pop project.

Tigers close the draft with Dalton Feeney, huge arm strength RHP from North Dakota. Up to 96-97 at times, heading to #Mizzou

Round 8:
Closest to the majors: Detroit Tigers: Jacob Robson, OF, Mississippi State.
Hey, back to back Mississippi State guys in this spot. That?s fun, right? Robson is one of the fastest runners in the class, and he uses that speed and quality instincts make him a quality defender at all three spots. There?s zero power here, but he should get on base enough to be a fourth outfielder in a relatively short amount of time.
