Mike Green- 3 yrs/18 M

Wouldn't mind Richards at the right price. Solid centerman.

Brad Richards signs with Detroit. 1 year with a base of 3 million. Gets up to 4 million with playoff bonus'.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland was watching in the second round of the playoffs when the Washington Capitals spit up a 3-1 series lead against the New York Rangers.

So Holland knows exactly what he’s getting in defenseman Mike Green, whom he signed to a three-year deal Wednesday with an average salary cap hit of $6 million -- the same money Green was making in Washington.

Holland knows that the $6 million a year means he is getting a dynamic back-end player who can move the puck seamlessly from the defensive zone, join the rush, and finish plays as well as most any defenseman in the league.

The longtime Red Wing GM also knows he’s getting a defenseman that the Capitals coaching staff tried to hide as much as possible last season, reducing Green’s five-on-five exposure by moving him to the third pairing while still giving him ample power-play time to try and maximize his considerable offensive talents.

Meh. Think this is the product of an obsession with right handed shooting offensive defense men. In reality I don't know how much better this makes the team if at all and they just killed off 6 mil in cap space for three years.

He hasn't put up more than 45 pts in five years. In three of those years he didn't crack 50 games. And he's at the very best a sub average defensive player.

Not enthused. Sggatecl's post is the most telling. Basically we got a guy who's ice time the team will really try to limit unless on the power play. He's a third pairing power play specialist....at a 6 mil cap hit. They didn't need a defenseman that badly, and Green probably doesn't make the team much better if at all.

To me, this is replacing whichever mediocre defenseman loses his spot with another mediocre defensemen who is getting paid 3x as much.

Not sure.. Guess only time will tell.. My only problem with sign long tooth veterans is they always seem to come to us and really start to break down...

Green is 29. He's not even close to being long in the tooth

Richards is 35. A veteran yes, but not ancient in NHL terms. There are still guys in their 40s plugging along.

I think this is a great deal. Green is a second liner defensively, but a star offensively. His defense gets bashed enough that he's actually underrated at that end. No, he's not a a legitimate Norris candidate, but that's not really what the team needs. What it needed was someone who can make accurate passes out of the zone, and hold onto the puck in his own end. Green does both of those things well. He'll be at the point with the man advantage, and sure probably get only sparing minutes killing penalties. But again, we have plenty of defensive defensemen to kill penalties. The team needed this kind of spark, and that has nothing to do with being a right-handed shot.

I hope you are right..

Hopefully they both stay healthy.... Last two season he has played 70 and 72 games. looks like he battled injuries the three seasons before that. He only averages 63 games a season.. Probably a few games higher if you take out year one..

Richards looks more durable as his last six seasons are games played as followed.
80,72,82,46,82,76. He averages 70 a season in his long career.. Old guys get hurt hopefully neither will..

Eh searching for negatives in something like this is kinda stretching it. Just be happy.

Just an opinion Z. Heck i am the only one that hardly post on the Wings board in the regular season. Not negative at all just looking at the numbers...I just wanted impact.. Hope both have a big impact.. But Holland and his free agents have been sub par recently and he whiffed on Hossa over Franzen. It's Just after getting all this money under the cap the last few years I was hoping for a bigger splash..

Not sure what you wanted...Most sites had Mike Green as the top free agent available.

So, they made the biggest splash possible. And it fit a glaring need.

Ok hope your right for sure.. Tired of the hawks winning Cups... If Holland and the wings had just some luck with few tweaks here and there since 2008 and i think we could have had another cup or two.. I Like the drafting Holland and his staff do for sure especially the draft positions we have had the last 20+ years.. It really is amazing...I will try not and be spoiled about it anymore..

Its been so odd why FAs have declined to join us recently. Maybe it really was just the coach. But idk.

The More I read up on Green the more I am worried this is a reach at six million... I guess he moves into the wings top 3 defense-men but what is that really saying Z. I am just a worry wart and so want anything to work for us..

Green is a bad deal. He's getting paid like a top 20 dman and he's not particularly close to a top 20 dman. He's also on the wrong side of thirty.

This is basically the Wings drastically overpaying for a perceived need. The problem I have with it is I seriously doubt anyone was even approaching this offer for Green. I would be shocked and amazed if any other team was offering a deal close to that big.

The good news is it can be an abysmal contract but it only has to be that for 3 years.

They didn't pull an Ericsson and commit themselves to a bad contract for a ton of years.

Yeah 3 years is OK I guess but the Rangers abused green in their playoff series. .. hopefully he worKS our ..
