Tigers vs. rangers 9-29-15 Game 157

ages 30, 31 & 32. Would have been a good time to jump off as he declines.

Yet, he is still a top 5 hitter in baseball, while the other 5 are under 30.... hmmm.

Let's pay the money to lesser players because they are under 30, right Tom?

Players get big contracts and salaries for what they have Done already,
This all changed when Marvin Miller took over and formed the Players Union.

Before that owners and GM's had the upper hand, When Mantle won the triple crown in 1956, the following 1957 season wasn't as great, and the GM wanted to give him a cut in salary,

Tom Dalton is living 50/60 years in the past. It is the way of sports, Most every team has contracts like the ones given to Cabrera, Verlander, in the upper 20 Millions to the Kinsler, Sanchez signings in the teens of millions.
Any team that doesn't do this a struggling to play .500 ball 9 out of 10 times.

You keep arguing ad nauseum about salaries, injuries, that happen to all players young or older, if you don't like it, stop watching, I've said it before, your shit grows old and weary some to all.

You probably don't like unions at all. Want to do away with minimum wages and pay someone $3 bucks an hour.

This shit is like going around the world 100's of times with someone we don't want to hear. Same shit day after week after month after year.

and you're probably going to come back with some slightly different spin on it to continue the argument that nobody gives a shit about.

First, every team does NOT have contracts like the ones given to Miggy and JV ($28M+ STARTING at the age of 32) and the the Tigers are the ONLY team that has two of them!

I NEVER said that paying players is a bad thing. Not once! When they signed Miggy to the first contract I was as happy as the rest of you. My point is, and always has been, paying players past their prime is a terrible way to do things. THAT was the reason I hated the JV extension and the Miggy extension.

Unfortunately, I will be proven right.

You don't get it, you have to pay players for their going into and past their prime years, the Ilitch type owners know it brings in all kinds of fan revenue, all owners do this, and if they let him walk, recent times Pujols, another team will sign them. Whether they put up the same or less numbers. It was posted earlier that both signed, JV in his prime, and Miggy on the cusp of leaving.
Lets just sign players to age 32 and make sure their contracts are over at that age, and not resign them and let them go. This is baseball, players keep producing up to and into their early 40's.
This is what give posters here a headache reading this same shit from you. It's why most everyone else here tunes you out except for a couple, and then me after reading this back and forth shit. Glad you're not the GM we would have a 60 million payroll.

First, Mr I might not be as smart as you think...since the Tigers have been losing money for years. As Rebiv has said over and over...this impacts the farm system / player development. Second, if it were up to me I would pay players past the age of 32...just not those HUGE long term deals that START at 32. I wouldn't have a payroll of $60M, I would spend what the owner allows me to spend...but I wouldn't have a team of stars and scrubs.

St Louis let Pujols walk. At that time he was arguably a better hitter leading up to that point than Miggy is. They are still a contending team with a balanced lineup, rotation and bull pen. That is how you fill the stands, make money and win.

D. Price (30) Free Agent

The average age of a player signing his first extension or going Free Agent is 29-30. Unless, of course, they are star players and they entered earlier than 24. And this are usually the ones that are getting the long contracts with big monies.

McCutchen is 28 and signed an extension when he was 25 before he starting hitting .300 BAVG. Although he is signed through 2018 with club option, PIT risks losing him if they don't re-sign him to an extended contract.

I can see both sides of this argument being right. It's a big risk either signing or letting the face of your franchise leave.

Outside of his injuries he's still in his prime if you ask me. Look at his numbers, not just home runs, and tell me I'm wrong.

I agree...Miggy is at the tail end of his prime. His slightly declining numbers are mostly due to injuries which are most likely to continue as an aging player's body typically breaks down more often due to wear and tear.

You never know if someone is at the end of their prime until they get there. Not every ballplayer start to fade at the same age. And I've seen guys have an injury or two in their 30's then play all the season the next 4 years.

Power is going to drop, that's natural. That's why you sign Miggy because he's not just a power guy. He can still hit well. But unless you draft extremely well, you need to sign aging stars to big money or you end up like 2003.
