China's air pollution could be intensifying storms over the Pacific Ocean and altering weather patterns in North America, according to scientists in the US. A team from Texas, California and Washington state has found that pollution from Asia, much of it arising in China, is leading to more intense cyclones, increased precipitation and more warm air in the mid-Pacific moving towards the north pole.

According to the team's findings, which were released on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, these changes could ultimately contribute to erratic weather in the US.

an account I read said the problem with Earth's carrying capacity isn't the number of people alone, but the number of people consuming resources at the rates of those in the developed countries (as that term is used to mean "1st World as of the 2000's").

or course, they are not mutually exclusive since we can't really demand other people reduce or contain their development on a large scale without doing so ourselves.

That's the bigger factor right now. The global rate of resource use increasing faster due to the raising of standards in 2nd and 3rd world countries more than population growth. A lot of people are seeing increased access to things like meat.
