Alex Avila struck out three times Friday night and is hitting .206 for the season. But he has had plenty of success in the past against Cleveland Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer.
Avila is 5 for 8 with a home run against Bauer, who will start for the Indians today. Avila is starting at catcher and will bat seventh for the third consecutive game.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has opted to go with Rajai Davis over Anthony Gose in center against a right-hander. Gose is 6 for 25 with 12 strikeouts in his past seven games.
Bauer (2-0, 0.95 ERA) has a strange pitching line through three starts this season. He has issued more walks (11) than he has allowed hits (eight) in 19 innings of work. He also has struck out 26.
J.D. Martinez is 5 for 11 with a home run vs. Bauer, while Ian Kinsler is 5 for 15 with a home run.
The Tigers and Indians will don throwback uniforms of the Detroit Stars and Cleveland Buckeyes as part of the Tigers' Negro Leagues Tribute Weekend. A pregame ceremony will honor eight former Negro Leagues players: Melvin Duncan, Eugene Scruggs, Bill Hill, Charlie Davis, Walt Owens, Pedro Sierra, Ron Teasley and Jake Sanders.
• Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler and outfielder J.D. Martinez have fared well in their careers against Bauer. Kinsler has hit .333 with one home run in 15 at-bats, while Martinez has posted a .455 average with a homer in 11 at-bats. Alex Avila (moved up to seventh in the lineup earlier this week) is 5-for-8 with a home run and two walks against Bauer.
• Indians slugger Brandon Moss launched a three-run home run and delivered a two-run double in Friday's game against the Tigers. Over his past six games, Moss has posted an .818 slugging percentage (18 total bases in 22 at-bats) for Cleveland.
• Indians All-Star Michael Brantley, who dealt with a back issue earlier this month, has been heating up of late. With his 3-for-4 showing on Friday night, Brantley has hit .368 (7-for-19) in his past five games. He has hit .583 (7-for-12) in his career against Simon.
