1904: At Huntington Avenue Grounds, Cy Young of the Boston Americans hurls the second of his three no-hitters, a 3 - 0 perfect game against the Philadelphia Athletics and Rube Waddell. Young will eventually complete 24 straight hitless innings, still the record, and 45 shutout innings in a row, a record until broken by Jack Coombs' 53 scoreless frames in 1910.

1906: Recovering from a case of diphtheria contracted before the season, Christy Mathewson makes his first appearance of the year for the New York Giants. He pitches seven solid innings against the Boston Beaneaters, allowing seven hits before being relieved by Joe McGinnity, who allows three runs in the 9th inning to turn a 4 - 3 lead into a 6 - 4 defeat.
1922: Facing the Detroit Tigers, Bill Bayne of the St. Louis Browns pitches a no-hitter into the 9th inning. Detroit manager Ty Cobb then sends up five straight pinch hitters, the first of whom breaks up the no-hitter. One of the pinch hitters Cobb inserts is Bob "Fatty" Fothergill, who bats for him and strikes out, becoming the only man ever to pinch hit for Cobb. The Browns win.

1925: Detroit Tigers player/manager Ty Cobb hits three home runs, a double and two singles and 16 total bases, to lead his team to an 14 - 8 victory against the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park.

1925: Everett Scott of the New York Yankees is benched, ending his streak of 1,307 consecutive games played that started in 1918 while playing for the Boston Red Sox. Scott, who gives way to Pee Wee Wanninger at shortstop, has the longest playing streak to that point, but his record will be broken by Lou Gehrig.
1930: The Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns, 4 - 3, in 12 innings and score all their runs on solo home runs. Al Simmons' lead-off home run in the bottom of the 12th makes Lefty Grove a winner over General Crowder, as both starters go all the way. Joe Boley, with two homers, and Mule Haas, with one, provide the other Athletics runs, a record to date in the American League. The New York Giants will score five runs on solo homers five weeks from now.
1935: At Braves Field, young pitcher Dizzy Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals faces the Boston Braves and 40-year-old veteran Babe Ruth. Dean walks Ruth in his first at-bat, then with two strikes on the Bambino, waves his outfielders back and throws a fastball down the middle that Ruth misses for a strikeout. Dean wins the game, 7 - 0, and in his first at bat, hits a home run over Ruth's head in left field. Dean will face Ruth again on May 19th, holding him hitless again, and winning that game as well.
1946 - Leon Day, pitching for the Newark Eagles, throws an Opening Day no-hitter against the Philadelphia Stars, winning, 2 - 0. It is the last 9-inning no-hitter in the Negro Leagues.
1948: The Detroit Tigers purchased Marlin Stuart from the St. Louis Browns.
1949: Charlie Gehringer, great second baseman of the Detroit Tigers between 1924 and 1942, is selected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America with 159 votes on 187 ballots. The Tigers great 2nd Baseman was a career .320 hitter with seven 200 hit seasons, scoring 1,775 runs and hitting 574 doubles, and the A.L. MVP in 1937.

1955: Brooklyn Dodgers rookie Tom Lasorda makes his first major league start as he he throws three wild pitches in one inning, tying a major league record. After his pitching career, Lasorda will enjoy far more success as a Hall of Fame manager.

1961: Tigers 8 - White Sox 4. Chico Fern?ndez finishes 3-for-5 with a double. Five other Tigers each have 2 hits. Tigers are 13-5, Tied for AL lead.
1962: Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Bo Belinsky hurls a no-hitter vs. the Baltimore Orioles in just his fourth major league start!

1963: The Detroit Tigers released Vic Wertz.
1977: Mark Fidrych appears on the cover of Rolling Stone. Remains the only baseball player to appear on the cover.

1987: The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Balvino Galvez to the Detroit Tigers for Orlando Mercado.
1991: The Detroit Tigers released Danny Leon.
1993: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Garcia.
2004: Mike Piazza passes Carlton Fisk for most home runs hit by a catcher when he hits his 352nd round-tripper as a catcher.

2009: The Dodgers tie a post-1900 major league record with their 12th straight win at home to open the season when they beat Arizona, 3 - 1. Detroit is the only other team to win its first twelve games at home.
2013: Justin Verlander makes a bid for his third career no-hitter, keeping the Astros hitless into the 7th inning, before allowing a one-out single to Carlos Pena; he gives up another single to Carlos Corporan but gets out of the inning with a double play ground ball and then leaves. The Tigers win easily, 9 - 0. Verlander is now 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA.
