NOTABLE:
Tigers catcher James McCann was removed from the game after suffering a left hand laceration when he was hit by a pitch.

Bad base-running plagued both sides on Thursday night.

In the third inning, Astros center fielder George Springer apparently forgot how many outs there were on a fly ball to right field and was easily doubled off first base.

In the fifth, Tigers center fielder Tyler Collins made a bad read on a line drive to first base and was doubled off second.

Dixon Machado started at third base on Thursday in place of Nicholas Castellanos, who was getting the second of two scheduled off days.
In the second inning, he hit a 400-foot fly-out to dead center field, a rare show of power for someone who has no extra-base hits in 2017. He got a bloop single in the fourth, but popped out to leave the bases loaded in the fifth.

Victor Martinez will occasionally try to poke the ball other way when faced with a shift. He's even tried to bunt, as he did again in the fourth inning Thursday night. This one went foul, and the Astros showed no signs of budging from their shift.

After getting his first off day on Wednesday, J.D. Martinez launched his seventh home run on a slow 0-2 curve from Astros starter Mike Fiers. The homer, estimated 430 feet, very nearly left the park, hitting the railroad tracks above the columns in left field.

Verlander couldn't finish the sixth inning, giving up six runs on nine hits and striking out only four.

Boxscore.

ROARS:
J.D. Martinez: He hit a home run, narrowly missed a second, and scored a pair of runs in the losing effort.
Martinez finished 2-for-4 with those two extra-base hits and now is batting .378 with a 1.513 OPS in 12 games this season after spending the first several weeks on the disabled list.
Since his season debut on May 12, he is the only big leaguer to have three homers of 425 feet or farther.

Miguel Cabrera: He wasn’t always rewarded, but Cabrera was hitting rockets all over the ballpark. A lineout to Jose Altuve in the third inning resulted in another unnecessary double play — this one was Ian Kinsler’s fault — and he hit a deep fly ball to center in the sixth.

Justin Upton: The Tigers’ left fielder broke out of a slump with three hits, including a solo home run in the seventh. Upton drove in a pair of runs and was stranded in scoring position twice.

HISSES:
Justin Verlander: This was a bad start for Verlander, particularly when his team needed it the most. He looked decent through the first few innings, but things fell apart quickly after that. He gave up six runs on nine hits (including three home runs), and only pitched 5 2⁄3 innings the day before a doubleheader.

Tyler Collins: His defense continues to be subpar at best, and a baserunning blunder in the fifth inning cost the Tigers a huge run. He also popped out with a runner on third base and one out in the eighth inning, when the Tigers had a chance to take the lead.

Smoked by a better runned team and done so much cheaper then our management,. Start the sell off.

Houston was so bad for so long that they got many high draft picks that are now in the bigs.. Not sure it's be worth enduring consecutive seasons of 55, 55, and 51 wins.
