Game 37 Tigers vs. orioles May 16, 2017

Starting pitching stunk.
Bullpen ended being garbage as usual. Another blown save by a tiger closer..
Was the hitting good ?
Because this many runs it should be a resounding yes but situationally some guys are just brain dead at the plate .

The top two ended 4 for 16 not good.

NOTABLE:
J.D. Martinez returned Friday after spending nearly eight weeks on the disabled list. He hit two home runs on Saturday and then repeated the feat on Tuesday night.
Since his return, he's 6-for-13 with four homers, two singles and five walks. He's scored four runs and driven in eight.

Tigers reliever Bell pitched four scoreless innings and has yet to allow a run since making his MLB debut six days ago in Arizona.

The Tigers scored the first run of the game when Orioles first baseman Chris Davis squandered a potential inning-ending double play in the first.
Davis cleanly fielded a ground ball from Victor Martinez and stepped on first base. When he looked up to see Ian Kinsler racing home, Miguel Cabrera (the baserunner on first at the start of the play) was able to sneak back to the bag.

The Tigers missed a chance to build a big lead in the first when Mikie Mahtook ripped a liner to right with the bases loaded. Baltimore's Joey Rickard made a diving catch, saving at least two runs and probably three.

Two home runs in the third inning just barely cleared the left-field wall.
J.J. Hardy's homer in the top of the inning went 354 feet;
Victor Martinez's went 353.

Both had Hit Probabilities of about 10 percent, according to Statcast, meaning virtually all balls struck at similar speed, angle and distance end up as outs.

Lefty Blaine Hardy allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits in an inning of relief. He gave up a leadoff home run to Davis in the top of the 12th.

Former Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez gave up two runs in the 13th, including another home run by Davis. The Tigers didn't have any magic left this time in the bottom of the inning.

Tyler Collins, just like he did in the 11th, made the final out of the inning. Collins is mired in an 0-for-30 slump.

Roars:
Chad Bell: He did allow both of his inherited runners to score, which should not be excused, but he went on to into the seventh cleanly, and kept the Tigers? offense within striking distance.

J.D. Martinez: Two more home runs. Ho hum. Oh, and a pair of walks too. J.D. is now hitting .500/.647/1.500 since returning from the DL. We need to find a way for him to return from injury once a week, without having to miss any time due to injury. Get on that, scientists.

Victor Martinez: A two-run dinger and an RBI groundout accounted for the majority of the Tigers run-scoring. Plus, it?s always nice to see him turn on an inside pitch and prove he?s still got good hands.

Hisses:
Matt Boyd: A seven-run inning speaks for itself, even if two of them were bequeathed to a reliever. Boyd just didn?t have any control tonight.

Nick Castellanos:
After an 0-for-5 night, Castellanos is now hitting .150/.222/.200 over his last 10 games. He?s still hitting the ball as hard as anyone, though, and they?re bound to start falling in soon.

Tyler Collins: Somehow got four at-bats after pinch-hitting for Mikie Mahtook, and stranded six runners on base. Going 0-for-4 isn?t the end of the world, but that one hurts.

Tigers Live: Tonight was Fox Sports Detroit?s ?Analytics Night? broadcast, and while Kirk Gibson did a swell job of talking through some of the finer points during the early parts of the game, the pre-game show was sadly lacking. With Craig Monroe?s old-school viewpoint featured prominently, the show really served more to disparage advanced stats than to promote or educate.

Stats and Info:
Victor Martinez?s third inning home run was his second of the year, and his first right-handed home run since he one off of Danny Duffy last September 23rd. Victor is hitting .394/.459/.606 in his last nine games.

Today marked only the second start in the month of May for Mike Mahtook. He hit a line-drive double in the third inning today, but stranded four runners in his other two at-bats.

Jose Iglesias came into the game hitting with a .393 OPS in his last 15 games, but hit two singles in his six trips tonight.

another disappointing loss. Take the lead after being down 6 then tie it up in extra innings being down 3 and still lose.

Remember that no bullpen has an ERA of 0.00. Or an ERA of 5.40. Ausmus is in abject denial. Or willful obfuscation. Tigers essentially are operating a pen that is short two pitchers. It's like they have a 23-man roster. 22-man if you count Collins as another empty uniform. He is hitting .063 in May with 36 PA. There is no one in the Tigers' org better than that?

To play CF, probably not. Mahtook? Jacoby Jones is injured.. Not sure who else they had. Maybe Romine.
