Game 38 Tigers vs. orioles May 17, 2017

Two reasons J Wilson is not a great closer. 1 He is left handed. Most line ups are loaded with right handed hitters. but there have been some good/great left closers. 2 His mind set is more 7th and 8th inning. Tonight will be a tell.

Tyler Collins broke out of an 0-for-30 slump with two home runs Wednesday night to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
It was the first multi-homer game of Collins' career.
Collins' last hit came on May 1. He had been hitless in nine games since, including a couple of critical outs in the Tigers' 13-11 loss to the Orioles in 13 innings on Tuesday night.

NOTABLE:
Tigers starter Michael Fulmer allowed four runs, three earned, in seven innings of work Wednesday. He has logged eight Quality Starts (at least six innings, three earned runs or fewer) in a row to start the season.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus visited the mound with two outs in the seventh and Orioles slugger Chris Davis at the plate. Rather than turn to the left-handed Blaine Hardy to face the left-handed Davis, Ausmus stuck with Fulmer, who got an inning-ending strikeout.

Davis is now 1-for-7 with five strikeouts in his career against Fulmer.

Tigers relievers Alex Wilson and Justin Wilson pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

Wilson gave up a run in the ninth Tuesday night for his first blown save since being named closer on May 9.

Ubaldo Jimenez, has yielded more homers to the Tigers (15) than any other team he?s faced in his 307 big-league outings.

Webvideo Highlights of the Tigers Win over the orioles.

ROARS:
Tyler Collins: Blasted two home runs and drove in all but one of the runs.

Michael Fulmer: Seven innings, four runs (three earned), no walks, and four strikeouts.

Alex Wilson: Pitched a snappy 10-pitch eighth inning without so much as breaking a sweat. Just the way a relief inning should be.

HISSES:
Locked away for the night.

STREAKS AND INFO:
Tyler Collins? home run in the second inning snapped an 0-for-30 hitless skid. He finished with 10 total bases on the night ? a career-first. His previous career-high in total bases was seven, when he finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run on July 29, 2016 against the Astros.

Collins? two-homer game was the first of his career, and his fourth overall home run this season. That total matches his career-highs in 2015 and 2016, when he hit four for each year.

The Tigers? win snapped a mini two-game losing streak, and evened their record for the last 10 games to 5-5.

It is mind-boggling that C.B. Bucknor is an MLB umpire. How he could look at that check swing and call it a swing illustrates his incompetence. You can't guess that call, and there is no way it could ever be interpreted as a swing. That said ... I'll take it, until the Tigers get hosed by him in a similar way at some point.

Better than anything else we got, I'll take Wilson any day for the 9th over hit rod frank.

Lone, you sort of contradict yourself with point one. And with point 2, the mind is a very powerful thing. Once you tell him, "You are our guy, go close this game," he can embrace that. Athletes can be the most incredible freaks in the world, but if they can't adjust to the situation, they'll struggle.

He's got the nastiest stuff of any of the options to close right now. Make him the guy and adjust the setup men accordingly.

Makes perfect Avila/Ausmus sense to bring up a RP when 2 position players are gone..

Fulmer recorded his eight consecutive quality start to open the season, tied for second-best in franchise history, according to Baseball-Reference.com
In eight starts this season, Fulmer has a 2.72 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. He has not pitched fewer than six innings in a start.
