Game 39 Tigers vs. orioles May 18, 2017

Mark it down on your calendar.
ESPN has selected the Tigers-Red Sox game on June 11th for Sunday Night Baseball. Game time will be 8:05pm ET.

Might have got a break with ball 3 to Victor should have been called strike 3,

When Ausmus goes to the bullpen:

We may actually win this series. Who gets the honors of the 9th?

Edit: Alex Wilson

I cannot believe the calls that Bucknor is butchering behind the plate. He makes this guy seem like a world-class neurosurgeon.

I can't believe the Tigers still try to steal bases. Unreal

Alex Wilson RHP is pitching to an LHH to start the ninth. Does not want to pitch to Machado?

23-16 would have been a ton better than 20-19...it amazes me they are just going to carry two guys in the pen whom you really don't ever want to use in any situation

And it best be John hicks that gets the call back up for the Texas series

No miggy no vmart for the next series and they're going to bring up buck farmer instead of John hicks cuz the bullpen is over taxed since Sanchez and hit rod are worthless

Clown show

J.D. Martinez now has five home runs in six games since returning from a nearly eight-week stint on the disabled list on May 12. He also walked three times on Thursday and has now reached base in 17 of 25 plate appearances since his return.
J.D. Martinez, who missed the first six weeks of the season with a right mid-foot sprain, is the first Major Leaguer since 1999 to post eight or more hits and eight or more walks in his first 24 plate appearances in a season.
In six games, Martinez has five homers, 11 RBI and a 2.118 OPS

NOTABLE:
Tigers closer Justin Wilson wasn't available today after throwing 46 pitches over the last two days.

Instead, the Tigers used Shane Greene to pitch the seventh and eighth while Alex Wilson handled the ninth for the fourth save of his career.

Thursday's start offered good and bad news for Jordan Zimmermann, who ultimately surrendered four runs over six innings.
He allowed two homers and has now given up 11 on the year, including 10 in his last five starts.
On the positive side, he struck out a season-high six batters (all on curves), the most since May 16, 2016.

Victor Martinez, who will be placed on the paternity list after the game, hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Catcher Alex Avila doubled twice, giving him six on the season in just 73 plate appearances. He had six doubles last year with the Chicago White Sox in 209 plate appearances.

Shane Greene pitched 1-2/3 innings and didn’t allow a hit or a walk, while striking out two.

Webvideo Highlights of the Tigers Win over the orioles.

ROARS:
J.D. Martinez - Did someone order ANOTHER home run? Martinez hit the game-tying home run in the bottom of the third, proving yet again just how much the Tigers missed his offense when he was on the disabled list. Martinez has already knocked in five home runs in his short time back. Of course the home run wouldn’t have been as sensational without some strong plate work from Jose Iglesias (and a failed throw-out by the Orioles).

Justin Upton - Made a killer catch in the fourth inning for the second out, showing he’s really heating up defensively. He also very nearly snagged Adam Jones’ home run ball, missing it over the wall by a fraction of an inch.

HISS-ISH:
Jordan Zimmermann - twenty pitches in an inning is never a good sign.
Two consecutive innings usually implies the opposing team has a pitcher’s number early, and that was the case for the Orioles, who beat up on Zimmermann to take an early 3-0 lead.
By the fourth inning, Zimmermann was building up some control again, finding his groove. Right up until he gave away another home run to Adam Jones.

Overall Zimmermann wasn’t too bad. Maybe instead of a his he deserves a half-hiss. A hairball cough? We’ll go with hiss-ish.
He struck out six, and did manage to get through six innings, which the overworked Tigers bullpen definitely needed.
Ultimately it was a decent showing that could have looked a lot worse without the aid of the offense.

STREAKS & INFO:
Alex Avila, who is likely going to see a lot more playing time with
Miguel Cabrera out, is still sensational, hitting .377/.479/.672, and
extended his hitting streak to three games, two of those multi-hit games. Admittedly it’s not a huge streak, but does demonstrate he won’t slow down anytime soon.

The aforementioned bullpen was kept on a mighty short leash from the seventh inning onward. Blaine Hardy came on, gave up a home run to Seth Smith, and was promptly relieved by Shane Greene.
As much flack as Brad Ausmus gets for his management of the bullpen he was on the ball today, not wanting to squander the team’s narrow lead.

Greene looked good, very different from his uneven and concerning starts of the early season. As the weather warms up he’s looking sharper and sharper. His fastballs were touching 97 miles per hour today, so it’s safe to say he’s feeling his pitches again.

Alex Wilson came in for the ninth and collected his fourth career save.
