Problems with the Tigers

The primary problem with the Tigers is they've been scoring less runs than their opponents in games more often than not lately.

It's a combination of the pitching being less good than the opponents' pitching more often than not, and the hitting being less good than the opponents' hitting more often than not.

Until this trend reverses, things are not going to get better; in fact, things will probably continue to get worse.

I had not read this page of the thread until today. Busy doing others things.
YEA
Hammer hit nail here.

Scherzer a 42 pitch inning ! And only in the 3rd inning with 71 pitches! Heck need an adding machine for this inning. 8-24-14

I read somewhere if you score more than the other team you're chance of winning is like 85%.

They have a 1B that they signed (too early) to a $300M extension that has a high OBP but has no power. Their "$200M ace (who they signed after an MVP season) has a 4.8+ era.

There salaries together could buy either Miami or Houston entire roster. Stanton by himself would be a prize. Henderson Alvarez not too bad either or the Marlins. Jose Altuve, Dallas Keuchel from the Astros. Shoot between the two teams one might put a good team together.

Both of whom had offseason surgery that takes a while to come back to 100% from and both of whom have been playing through various injuries. Miggy's ankle injury is the reason he has no power right now, he cant use his bottom half much to drive the ball (the offseason surgery is also a likely contributor.) JV's shoulder problems were the direct result of not being completely recovered from the core surgery and adjusting his mechanics as a result. They should both be fine next year.

Free Agents next 2 years (2015, 2016)

DET 13 (Avila, Davis, Hunter, V. Martinez, Kelly, Scherzer, Porcello, Nathan, Chamberlain, Coke, Price, Soria, Johnson)

MIA 7 (G. Jones, McGehee, J. Baker, Mathis, R. Johnson, Furcal, Gregg)

HOU 6 (Fowler, Qualls, J. Williams, Sipp, Veras, Albers)

There isn't a single free agent from MIA or HOU in the next 2 years worth drooling over. However, there is at least 6-7 Tigers we just don't have adequate replacements for.

they could both be fine next year...then again...maybe not. My main point was DD signed both of these guys to their extensions at the wrong time. Both have regresses since their extensions. While both are likely due to injury that comes with the territory when players get into their 30's.

I like the end of this....

Ultimately, Detroit's chances of catching Kansas City come down to pitcher health. A rotation headed by a healthy Scherzer, Price, Sanchez and Porcello or Verlander is every bit as good as the Nationals' and the A's and whatever else playoff teams want to throw out there. They need Sanchez, and they need Joakim Soria to fortify their Nitroglycerin Bullpen

Anibal Sanchez for 15+ mill needs to get healthy! Like he has never pitched 200 innings, close but the DL seems to find. He has blisters on his finger. Now this DL might end his season!

DD you never have enough PITCHING!

TOTAL lack of PLANNING.

Fail pen/run pen will not win in the playoffs. Who in the game when the game ends the bull PEN. DD does not get it.
