Might be closer to happening....and it should.

DETROIT -- It may mean nothing. Then again, it could be a sign of things to come.

For the first time in his professional career, Detroit Tigers infield prospect Dixon Machado was instructed Sunday to start a game at third base in Triple-A Toledo.

Which begs the question: Why?

It may mean nothing. But with the exception of two games in which Machado started at second base, the 23-year-old has been used exclusively at shortstop throughout his seven-year career in Detroit's minor league system.

His first professional start at third base comes on the same day that Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos was held out of the starting lineup for a second straight day.

And based on comments manager Brad Ausmus made after Detroit's 12-4 blowout win Sunday, it's possible Castellanos could be held out for a third straight game.

Romine made his second straight start at third, and responded by going 2 for 3 with his first home run this season. After the game, Ausmus suggested that Romine could be back in the Tigers' starting lineup for a third straight day.

"(Romine) did a nice job," Ausmus told FOX Sports Detroit. "He'll probably be in the lineup tomorrow, quite frankly."

Are the Tigers considering the optioning Castellanos to Triple-A Toledo in the near future? And if so, is Machado currently being groomed to fill his void at third base?

Or is something even bigger on the verge of happening? Are the Tigers testing Machado out at third base in an effort to showcase him for a potential trade?

Again, it may mean nothing. But it's certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Every time I think they've emptied the cupboard completely, I'm proven wrong. This wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Machado is not a very good offensive player. I cannot believe another team would want him. If they did, it would be as a SS, not as a 3B. Think of Andrew Romine, who can take more walks.

Wonder why they never gave Hessman a shot at 3rd. prolly too late now, but the beast put up some great power number in AAA.

I'm fine with either - Nick to AAA, giving Machado a shot here, or trading either/both away for an actual MLB 3B and/or BP pitcher.

Anyone at this point may be better than Nick C. This guy was a highly touted prospect. It just goes to show that trading prospects for Major league players is not the worst thing in the world.

Randy Smith tired to build with so called prospects and failed repeatedly.

I hope DD can trade 2014 #1 pick Derek Hill away with Nick Castellanos for Todd Frasier.

Nick C just doesn't seem to be able to make the adjustments required to be a MLB ball player at this time.
