Tigers are 20-19 at home. Pirates are 18-19 on the road. Tigers are 7-7 and the Pirates are 5-4 in Interleague play this year. The Pirates have the 4th best winning percentage in all of baseball but have lost 6 of their last 9 games. They lost 2 of 3 against the Tigers in early April when the Tigers were still getting lights out pitching and shut them out twice. The Tigers are just 13-22 against non-AL Central opponents.

Can JV conjure up the ghosts of seasons past when he dominated the National League? Can he stay healthy after this start? JV is 25-3 with a 2.89 era in his 33 career starts against the NL. Cole is 6-1 with a 2.81 era in 8 career starts against the AL. The Pirates are 2nd in MLB with a 2.91 era.

Verlander is making his 3rd start of the season and had to miss his last start with mid-back stiffness. His last start at Yankee Stadium did not go well. He went 6.1 innings, gave up 10 hits, 3 home runs and 6 runs while only striking out 2 batters. JV is 28-25 with a 4.05 era in 68 starts since the beginning of 2003.

The 24 year old Cole has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this year and has matched his career high in wins with 11 already. He?s MLB?s only 11 game winner. His away era has been an incredible 1.71 in 8 starts. This will be his 2nd start against the Tigers in his short career. Back on April 13th he went 6 innings and gave up 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 8 in a 5-4 win. He has given up 2 earned runs or less in 12 of 15 starts and 3 earned runs or less in 14 of 15 games. He gave up 5 runs in 4.2 innings to the Reds in his last start. Cole has a 6.75 era against the Reds and a 1.33 era against everyone else this season.

Small sample but Tiger batters are just a combined 4-25 (.160) against him. Cespedes is 2 for 6. Tigers have been averaging 5.67 runs per game since VMart returned from the DL. Gose is 11 for 66 (.167) with 16 strike outs and just one extra base hit in June.

Pirate batters are hitting a combined .182 (12 for 66) with a .580 ops against JV.

Catcher Alex Avila, who has been on the disabled list since May 8 with a left knee injury, said Monday that he's ready to return to the Tigers by the end of the week.

Tonight's forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms and rain to hit Comerica Park around 6 p.m. It's expected to last until 9 p.m.

JV's first inning

3 walks, 1 hit, a wild pitch, 28 pitches and gives up no runs.

That BP better be ready tonight!

1-0 on the sac fly. Pitt is 27-7 when scoring first. We've won 2 in a row when not scoring first. Can we make it 3? 1 run might be enough for Cole.

God JV sucks now..Man did he lost it fast.. He needs to go talk to Maddux..

Then Kinsler gets no outs as Miggy drops the ball.. He couldn't have touched second i guess :/

rain, rain rain..

Well I think it's safe to say verlander hasn't successfully reinvented himself yet

So why are we playing the Pirates again instead of the Phillies? Shit.

When your stuff is average at best you have to nibble which will lead to a lot of walks.

What makes you think he's nibbling?
Do you know anything about baseball or pitching?
or are you just here waiting and pouncing on Verlander not getting any close pitches and going through his spring training until after the all-star break?
