I'm confused on what point this makes???

To me it shows that Green and Pelfrey have been shitty starters at the MLB level. The Minor league stats show me that Green was shitty there too. They also indicate that the other minor league starters in the system weren't much better down there.

Especially Daniel Norris. He has been the worst, both at the MLB thus far and what he has done at the minor league level. Yes, he has electric stuff. So did/does Oliver Perez and/or Andrew Miller and eventually someone figured out they needed to be in the pen. The same thing that should have been done with Ledezma.

Fulmer and Kyle Ryan have had the best success to date in the minors. Ryan is currently doing a stellar job in the pen.

Ledezma. I think I have like 10 of his autographed rc somewhere LOL..

Quality starts are just a HORRIBLE way to judge young pitching prospects. Especially players like Norris, who was drafted out of high school.

Ironically enough, Fulmer goes 5 strong innings tonight but no "quality start".

Not really. Your team is in the game with a quality start.

Not debating that. I'm pointing out that most young pitchers are on a strict pitch count and often don't make it through the 6th inning even when pitching well.

Also how many of those starts have been rehab starts? Quality starts is a terrible stat. When it equals 4.50 era, that's bad.

while I agree that going 6 innings and giving up 3 runs isn't great that is the worst possible line of a QS. My guess is most quality starts have a better ERA than 4.50

I have started looking at game scores for pitchers. IMO, That is a better reflection on how a pitcher performed.

Now how many of these are the 4.50 ERA variety? If the average start is less than 6 IP, how is not exceeding that not good?

Quality Starts is all about keeping your team in the game. Is that not what a starter is supposed to be doing? And if so, what other stat or metric determines this?

So Satchel Paige's 12 inning shutout vs. the Tigers wasn't a quality start? ;)

Thanks for posting all the stats in this thread. I understand what the stat is and seeing it and your follow-up is exceptional. I appreciate the time you take to highlight the finer, often ignored, finer points of this great game. Well done as usual.

If you go slightly above the average innings and worse on the earned runs, it's considered quality???

I have a hard time putting a start that is 6 innings and 3 runs in the same category as 9 innings and 0 runs. That's why it is a terrible stat.

There needs to be more separation within this stat. (I know, just what baseball needs is more stats). 6-7 inning allowing 2 runs or less, 8-9 inning for 3 runs or less. To me, those are quality starts. 6 innings and 3 runs is a good outing for Nate Robertson and who considers him quality???
