Verlander's lead in 8 categories was highlighted in yellow – games started (34), strikeouts (254), WHIP (1.00), batting average against (.207), innings (227.2), WAR (6.6 from Baseball Reference, 5.2 from Fangraphs) and games allowing two earned runs or fewer (23).

Porcello led in wins (22-4) and run support (7.63), and tied Verlander in Fangraphs' WAR; and Kluber didn't lead in any of the categories listed.

funny....3 of the Cy finalists are JV, Max and Porcello. 3 of 6 are current or recent Tigers.

Should be JV. I wish he had a couple more wins but it's his to lose imo.

I think theey are very close. I think Porcello might win because of his 22 wins. I think Max wins in the NL

JV has too many categories he has better number and some second place numbers. And don't forget his low run support. Porcello has wins and that's it, JV is better in everything else over Porcello. IMO, Porcello should finish 3rd..

he very well could finish 3rd. I'm just trying to guess what will happen.

Kluber has a better chance.. imo. Also Detroit only team that missed the playoffs. But this isn't the MVP but voters are fickle.

It's not a crock...just not the result we wanted. All 3 were deserving and none of them separated themselves. 3 very good seasons by the 3 of them.

Show me ONE metric other than a team metric(wins) that RP was better. Rick had a great year, but wasn't the best pitcher in the AL. Rick and Kluber were top 5 on all 30 ballots. JV was on 28. JV had almost twice as many 1st place votes as Rick. I find it odd that 2 voters didn't even think he was in the top 5.

I was there were 2 ballots that didn't list him in the top 5. Did they release the names of the voters and their ballots?

Yes. It was on the MLB network show. Two guys from Tampa left JV completely off their ballot. Both had Porcello, Kluber and Britton. Bill Chastain, from MLB.com -Tampa, had Sale and Tanaka. Fred Goodall, from Associated Press - Tampa, had Happ and Aaron Sanchez.

Verlander got more first-place votes (14) than Porcello (8), Verlander was not listed at all on two ballots, and consequently had fewer overall points (132) than Porcello (137).

In his two Cy Young Award losses, Verlander fell a combined nine points short.

In 2012, he fell one first-place vote short of Price in the closest vote in history.

Fuck you Bill Chastain and Fuck you Fred Goodall.
Two f'n asshole cunts who should have their voting privileges taken away.

Not only did the two TB writers leave JV off they both gave Porcello first place votes..

Virtually every metric that is important for a starter and not team dependent, Verlander finished in the Top 5. Put Verlander on the Indians or Sox, and he easily wins the award. Porcello does not win the award if he has the Tigers defense and the Tigers Bull Pen. Porcello also loses all that Run Support and would be lucky to win 15 games.

Now, that said, there is another thread during the year about Zach Briton for CYA. I said it then, and I will say it again, the voters still use wins or winning percentage to determine the award. That is why Porcello won. Sure, the Tampa Bay writers left JV off their ballots, but if they were voting based on what traditional voters look at (i.e. Wins or Winning Percentages), then I would understand based on that criteria. Understanding and agreeing with it are not the same.

Metrically speaking, I could make an argument that Chris Sale should have been in the top 3 over Corey Kluber. But it really doesn't matter who the 3rd starter (not a reliever, i.e. Britton) was. This was a determination between Verlander and Porcello. If Verlander wasn't going to win, then I would have wanted Porcello to win it. All things considered, Porcello had an outstanding season, just like Bob Welch had one in 1990.

If Verlander had better defense, relief pitching support or offensive run support, he walks away with this award easily. And if you take away 1 or two of those things from Porcello, he doesn't.
