Tigers vs. phillies 5-24-16 Game 45

Well if JV can be an Ace again and Zimmerman picked like a really good two, and the BP comes around. This team could be a threat in the division. We'll see.

Yikes that rope to left was almost a disaster...That Joseph guy ain't no joke

If the starting pitching goes deeper then the bullpen will be fine.

We have a closer and that's a strange but good thing for Tigers fans to see.

Justin Verlander has struck out 10+ batters in consecutive starts for the 5th time in his career (last, 9/23-9/29/2013).

Verlander allowed three hits, two walks and struck out 10. It was his 32nd career double-digit strikeout game.

According to Brooks Baseball, Verlander’s 2016 repertoire includes a four-seam fastball, slider, curveball and changeup. But it was the cutter that was on full display against the Phillies, throwing many of them to go along with a mid-90 m.p.h. fastball and solid off-speed stuff.

Francisco Rodriguez now has 400 Saves in his major league career. He is the 6th pitcher in MLB history to reach 400 Saves.

Others w/ 400 saves: Mariano Rivera (652), Trevor Hoffman (601), Lee Smith (478), John Franco (424) and Billy Wagner (422).

Cabrera's swinging strike on Hellickson's first-pitch slider in the third was his first swing and miss since last Wednesday. He had swung 34 times since then with either a ball in play, a foul ball or, in one case, a foul tip. Hellickson later finished off Cabrera for the reigning American League batting champion's first strikeout since May 13.

Cabrera struck out against starter Jeremy Hellickson in the third inning.
It was his first strikeout since May 13 and ended a streak of 42 plate appearances without one.

STREAKS AND STATS:
Verlander struck out his 10th batter to end the eighth inning. It was the third time he's struck out 10-or-more in a start and the 32nd 10+ strikeout game of his career.

Verlander's 10-strikeout game was the second consecutive start in which he did so. It's just the fifth time in his career that he's pitched back-to-back games with 10+ strikeouts. His last occurred on Sept. 23-29, 2013.

This was the fourth straight start in which Verlander went at least seven innings deep in a game, and the second time he pitched at least eight frames.

Francisco Rodriguez recorded the 400th save of his career, despite giving up a run on two hits in the ninth. He's just the sixth pitcher in MLB history to reach that mark, joining Mariano Rivera (652), Trevor Hoffman (601), Lee Smith (478), John Franco (424) and Billy Wagner (422).

The Tigers are over the .500 mark for the first time since Thursday, May 5.
The Tigers are 8-2 in their last 10 games, and 7-1 during this homestand.

great gem by JV! Now dirty Sanchez needs to pull his head out of his ass this afternoon and get the sweep

Completely missed this one. I was busy picking up an old boat I just bought. Sounds like I missed a real gem by JV.

According to Baseball Reference, Miguel Cabrera became the 23rd player in MLB history with 400 home runs and 500 doubles when he recorded his 500th career double Monday night against the Phillies.
