1940 - Detroit Tigers outfielder Hank Greenberg is named the American League MVP with Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller finishing second. Greenberg hit .340 with 41 home runs and 150 RBI, while Feller posted a 27-11 record with a 2.61 ERA. Having won the award in 1935 as a first baseman, Greenberg becomes the first player to win the MVP again playing a different position.

1971 - Vida Blue of the Oakland Athletics wins the American League Cy Young Award by a 98-85 margin over Mickey Lolich of the Detroit Tigers. Blue was 24 + 8 + led the AL in ERA, shutouts, FIP, + Whip. Lolich was 25 + 14, led the AL in Wins, IP, Games started, CG, + Strikeouts.

1948 - Commissioner Happy Chandler orders free agency for ten Detroit minor leaguers for the club's cover-up of their contracts. One of the players who will make the major leagues is Bill Serena, with a six-year career.

1962 - The Detroit Tigers begin a seventeen-game tour of Japan.

2012: The Giants shut out the Tigers, 2 - 0, in Game 3 of the World Series, behind Ryan Vogelsong, Tim Lincecum and Sergio Romo.
