Some bullpen relief trends

Joba 2014 all over again. Great first half, got shelled second half. Brad ran him into the ground over and over again. Fans knew he would suck yet Brad kept going to him. Brad has zero ability to adapt. His baseball acumen is laughable.

what do you mean by "ran him into the ground"?

Probably didn't use the best choice of words there but to clarify what I meant, was he had a great first half. Second half he began to struggle and you could just tell the guy was wearing down. Yet Brad night after night went to him in the 8th inning. Something a good manager does is realizes when one of his setup guys are struggling. Give them a little extra rest. Plug someone else into the equation, etc. Not that we had a BP full of guys in 2014 ready to get the job done, but just saying. I think he overused the crap out of him and his numbers struggled greatly because of it.

Here are Joba's numbers for 2014

April 10 1/3 innings 4.35 ERA
May 13 innings 1.38 ERA
June 10 1/3 innings 3.48 ERA
July 10 innings 3.60 ERA
Aug 10 1/3 innings 5.23 ERA
Sept 9.0 innings 4.00 ERA

He didn't have a great 1st half...he had a good month. Other than May, his usage was pretty consistent and he was not over worked.

Great? No, I'll give you that, but look at the difference:

Pre All-Star

2.63 ERA
37.2 innings
31 hits
11 earned runs
12BB/40K

Post All-Star

4.97 ERA
25.1 innings
26 hits
14 earned runs
12BB/19K

Ok so his usage actually went down after the all star break. But month to month his inning total was consistent. I already said rain into the ground was probably not the best choice of words. Either way, he was misused by Brad. This is only my opinion. And I remember many other posters with this same mind set posting about it back then.

The analysis of some of this is that Alex Wilson cannot be brought in on a regular basis with runners on base. There are pitchers who cannot pitch well from the set and thrive from the windup. And some are vice versa (Kyle Ryan). It is understanding where guys thrive. Ausmus has no clue when it comes to this. He tends to leave starters in too long and then consistently uses his pen with runners already on base, rather than starting an inning. This also impacts the fact that the Tigers under Ausmus' tenure leads all of baseball in Blown Quality Starts. Not by a little, but by a lot.

And finally, there are relievers that are having their worst year this year. Why? I speculate based on the data and other facts that it is in fact Ausmus not putting these relievers in the roles or situations that fosters success. Seems to me Neftali Feliz is doing well this year. Some might be due to health improvement, some might be the Pirates pitching coach and manager.

Brad and bullpens just are a bad mix. Like had been mentioned he just cannot adapt and this article proves it. His misuse of the bullpen is eye opening . Thanks Rebbiv..

this is classic. You write this and right below this statement you have your "sign off" that says "all stats have outliers"

Feliz, Johnson, Krol and Chamberlain are all having better years than when they were last with DET. Must be the year of outliers!

How can you add guys like Miller - he hasn't been on the team in forever. Like 9 years.
