White Sox 4 - Tigers 3: Classic Tigers.
bybtb

October 4 in Tigers and mlb history:

1922 - For the first time, the entire World Series will be broadcast over the radio. Writer Grantland Rice does the announcing of the New York Giants-New York Yankees Series for station WJZ, in Newark, NJ, whose signal is relayed to WGY in Schenectady, NY.

1925 - Harry Heilmann gets six hits in Detroit's doubleheader sweep over the Browns, 10 - 4 and 11 - 6, to edge out teammate Ty Cobb for the batting crown, .393 to .389. Cobb bats over .300 for the 20th time.
In the second game, fans see the unusual spectacle of two managers, both famous hitters, pitch against each other in the season finale. George Sisler of the Browns and Ty Cobb of Detroit both pitch in relief for the two clubs. Cobb is perfect in his one inning, while Sisler holds Detroit scoreless in two.

1934 - Schoolboy Rowe evens the World Series with a 12-inning, 3 - 2 victory, shutting out the St. Louis Cardinals over the final nine innings. The Detroit Tigers tie the game in the 9th inning and win on Goose Goslin's single.

1987 - The Detroit Tigers take advantage of one of the great collapses in history to win the AL East title, beating the Toronto Blue Jays, 1 - 0, behind the six-hit pitching of Frank Tanana. Toronto lost its last seven games of the season, including three straight in the season-ending series at Detroit.

2011: The Yankees tie their ALDS with Detroit at 2 games each with a 10 - 1 rout at Comerica Park. Due to the suspension of Game 1 which cost the two teams an off-day, the Yankees have to start the unpredictable A.J. Burnett against Rick Porcello, but he responds with a solid performance. Burnett gives up a run in 5 2/3 innings after issuing three walks in the 1st. New York puts the game away by beating up Detroit's bullpen for 6 8th-inning runs.

2013: The Tigers win Game 1, 3 -2, over Oakland, as Max Scherzer allows only 3 hits over 7 innings.

Miggy wasn?t ready to celebrate any personal achievements. Not with the team out of the playoffs. And not with how hard he had to battle this season, after off-season ankle and foot surgery and then missing six weeks with a calf strain.

He was asked if he was 100 percent healthy down the stretch this season.

?To be honest, I?ve got to say no,? he said. ?There were too many holes defensively and about my hitting because I wasn?t able to use my legs like I used to. I?ve got to change my approach. The last two or three years I do the same thing.?

He did the same thing in the offseason because he was rehabilitating injuries ? first the core muscle surgery, then the foot and ankle. He said the ankle pestered him at various times throughout the season. Besides the calf strain, he also battled a hand injury and back soreness.

That helps explain why his power numbers were down. He hit just 18 home runs with 76 RBIs ? his lowest production since his rookie season. His home run Saturday broke the longest drought of his career ? 29 games, since Aug. 26, and 121 plate appearances.

This will be the time since after the 2012 season that he will be able to do his normal off-season training regimen.

?It is very important to me to work out in the off-season,? he said. ?I will try to get my legs in shape, try to be 100 percent so I won?t get hurt late in the season and I can finish a full season strong.?

Draft pick status:
With Saturday?s walk-off loss, the Tigers ensured themselves of a top-10 pick (CLICK HERE for why that?s important) in next summer?s draft, the loss guaranteeing that the Seattle Mariners ? the next closest team outside the top 10 ? could not pass them with two losses of their own.

The Tigers currently sit at pick No. 8 in the reverse standings, but could drop to No. 9 with a win and a Padres loss. They cannot pass Miami for the No. 7 pick.

Rajai Davis, Justin Verlander earn September honors.
Rajai Davis hit .344 with 10 runs and eight extra-base hits in September, earning him Tigers Player of the Month honors.

Justin Verlander went 3-2 in September, with 33 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings pitched and a 3.27 ERA, earning him Tigers Pitcher of the Month honors.
