Game 92 Al Avila's Fire Sale Tigers vs. royals July 18, 2017

And the chances of qualifying for the postseason goes up to 12% after the third straight win
WOOO HOOO!

The Tigers found out less than two hours before game time Tuesday that
J.D. Martinez had been traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. There were hugs, tears and farewells, as well as the realization that the long-dreaded sell-off had officially begun.
Their response? They erupted for five runs in the top of the second inning and proceeded to beat the Kansas City Royals, 9-3, their season-high tying fourth straight win.

Nicholas Castellanos singled, tripled and homered twice to lead an offensive barrage that knocked Royals starter Travis Wood out of the game in the fifth inning.

Tigers starter Matthew Boyd gave up three runs on four singles in the first, but settled in to pitch five scoreless innings after that. He allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out three.
Boyd seems likely to get another turn in the rotation.

It might not be official until later. Daniel Norris, throwing a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo, allowed four earned runs on three hits in three innings Tuesday night.

Alex Presley started the game in right field after J.D. Martinez was traded. Presley has been platooning with Mikie Mahtook in center. Presley, Mahtook and Adduci could all see time in right field with Martinez gone.

Castellanos registered only the second multi-homer game of his career on Tuesday. He also hit two home runs on Aug. 19, 2015, at the Chicago Cubs.

And here's a more obscure stat: Castellanos is only the fourth Tiger since 1913 to have a single, a triple and two or more home runs in a game.
The last Tiger to do so was Dmitri Young on May 6, 2003, at Baltimore.

Castellanos has four home runs and over his past four games and is batting .350 (28-for-80) with 12 extra-base hits and 17 RBIs over his past 22 games. In the month of July, Castellanos is 18 for 53 (.339) with two doubles three triples, five home runs and 15 RBIs.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The go-ahead triple: With the score tied at 3 in the second inning and two out and two on, Castellanos sliced a short fly toward the right-field line. Royals right fielder Whit Merrifield nearly made a fully-extended diving grab, but the ball popped out of his glove as he hit the ground and Castellanos raced to third with a two-run triple to make it 5-3.

"It was a huge inning," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "To have them score three and then to come back and score five, to me that was the turning point in the game. The turning point usually doesn't come that early."

The Royals, trailing 6-3 in the sixth, made a little noise and threatened to creep back in the game. With two out, Alcides Escobar walked and Alex Gordon followed with a single to right-center, sending Escobar to third.
But Boyd got Ramon Torres to tap out to shortstop on a force play to end the threat. The Tigers then added two in the seventh and one in the eighth to put matters out of reach.

Webvideo Highlights of the Tigers win over the royals.

ROARS:
Nicholas Castellanos: This is the Castellanos we were expecting from day one this season. Nicholas homered twice, added a triple and a single, and led the Tigers with five RBI.

Victor Martinez: He only had one hit before a double off the wall in garbage time, but his RBI single in the second put the Tigers on the board and cut Kansas City?s early lead to 3-2. He has five RBI already this series.

Matt Boyd: A run-of-the-mill quality start isn?t always that impressive, but Boyd did a spectacular job of buckling down after a rocky first inning. He allowed three runs on four hits in that frame, but limited the Royals to just three more hits in his next five-plus innings.

HISSES:.
The J.D. Martinez trade: Let?s just say this one is a little lopsided.
