Game 98 Tigers vs. royals July 24, 2017

Once upon a time miggy would have ended games like this, those days are over

Just another loss from a not so good team paying a ton of over rated players .

DETROIT -- In his 184th game at Comerica Park, Justin Verlander may have walked off the mound for the last time in a home uniform. He left Monday's game, an eventual 5-3 loss to the Royals in 12 innings, to grand appreciation, as many fans from the announced crowd of 26,415 rose to applaud their longtime ace.

With trade rumors involving his name swirling, Verlander showed glimpses of his vintage self, featuring a mid-90s fastball and tight slider in seven innings of work, striking out nine.
Justin Verlander came out throwing fire, striking out five Royals batters in the first two innings.
Verlander had nine strikeouts Monday to pass Rube Waddell for 49th all-time in MLB history. Verlander gave up three runs on five hits (one home run) and walked two.
Verlander threw seven solid innings, armed with his best fastball velocity of the season ? averaging above 95 m.p.h. ? and his best command.
In three starts since the All-Star break, he has an ERA of 3.26. In the fourth inning, he allowed a run on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly. In the sixth, he allowed a solo home run to Jorge Bonifacio.
The past four starts show a version of Verlander that should entice any capable bidder. He has a 2.77 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, with 28 strikeouts in 26 innings.
Otherwise, the veteran was excellent. If it was his final start of a fantastic career at Comerica Park, we?ll find out over the next five days. If not, he?s scheduled to pitch here against the Astros on Sunday.

Alex Avila's two-run single in the sixth snapped an 0 for 14 slump.
Avila had been 2-for-15 against lefties (.133) before the hit.
Even with recent struggles, Avila is having his best season since he was an All-Star in 2011. His .280/.402/.488 slash line could be a boon to any contender.

Outfielder Alex Presley's 10-game hitting streak was snapped. He was 0 for 4 with a walk.

Another top Tigers trade target, closer Justin Wilson, pitched a one-two-three ninth inning, striking out one.

Webvideo Highlights and lowlights of the Tigers loss to the royals.

ROARS
Justin Verlander: So maybe three runs over seven innings doesn?t result in a dazzling ERA, but Verlander was very good. He worked quickly and pounded the zone all night, allowing runs on a couple papercuts and one mistake pitch. No doubt the scouts in attendance liked what they saw, and the Comerica faithful gave him a standing ovation, well aware that this may have been Verlander?s last appearance as a Tiger.

Mikie Mahtook: Reached base four times with two singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch, though he didn?t participate in any of the scoring.

Ian Kinsler: Two hits and a run scored.

HISSES
Bunting: Ian Kinsler singled to lead off the 10th inning and the Tigers decided to give their opponents a precious out by bunting him over to second base with Alex Presley, who was batting in the two-hole for some reason. Kinsler did not score.

Nick Castellanos: 0-for-5 with four runners left on base.

Victor Martinez: Three lazy fly balls to center field which were really just pop-ups on a total of six pitches, to go with a walk and a strikeout.
