2017 Tigers and MLB Draft

3 picks in and I'm bored stiff. Might be nap time..

lol. At least in the NFL you have your choice of espn and the NFL network.

Plus the guys they have on MLB Network are just kind of boring to listen to.

2017 MLB Draft profile: Alex Faedo, RHP, Florida Gators.
The Florida Gators have pumped out some big time pitching prospects lately. Alex Faedo may be the best yet.

18. TIGERS: Alex Faedo, RHP, Florida
The nephew of 1978 first-round pick and ex-big leaguer Len Faedo, Alex Faedo played at Tampa’s Alonso High for his uncle. An unsigned 40th-round pick in 2014, he became an instant rotation member at Florida, pitching ahead of A.J. Puk in the rotation by the end of 2016 and finishing the summer as the No. 1 prospect on USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. At that time, all three of his pitches–fastball, slider, changeup–earned plus grades from some scouts. Faedo had minor surgery on both knees in the fall, affecting his conditioning and offseason routine, and hadn’t quite gotten rolling for much of the spring as the calendar turned to May. At its best, Faedo’s slider rivals that of North Carolina’s J.B. Bukauskas, though it has a bit less power in the 83-84 mph range. He manipulates the pitch’s shape well and can locate it for strikes or as a chase pitch, though at times he gets too cute and throws too many sliders. Faedo’s fastball velocity has tended to be average at 88-92 mph this spring, but he’s pitched in the 92-94 register in the past, and he fills up the strike zone with his heater despite it having plus life. He can sink it and cut it, and at times his changeup has similar sinking life and run. Faedo’s longer arm action gives scouts some pause but hasn’t impeded his feel for the strike zone, and he has plenty of track record for clubs picking high to rely on.

Detroit Tigers Snag Power Right-hander Alex Faedo from Florida in First Round.
TigsTown

Alex Faedo, RHP, Univ. of Florida
Ht/Wt: 6’5”/220 B/T: R/R Age (as of 2017 MLB Draft): 21y, 7m.
Following an outstanding sophomore season that continued into the summer with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, Faedo looked like a potential 1:1 candidate. After missing some time in the fall with arthroscopic surgery to both knees, Faedo took some time to get rolling this Spring as his fastball velocity backed up a tick and his control also took a hit. Despite the occasional struggles, Faedo has also flashed dominance over the past few months, logging nine starts in which he’s allowed one or fewer earned runs.
There’s some projection remaining Faedo’s frame, with room to fill out and firm up a body capable of eating innings at the professional level. With an above-average fastball that sits in the 91-to-93 mph range, a hard-biting plus slider that registers as one of the better pitches in the entire draft class, and a seldom used changeup that can flash above-average, Faedo provides an attractive target for teams looking for a collegiate arm that can offer upside and a solid track record. He should be selected relatively early on Day One and is a lock to go in the top 50 picks.

Certainly a player that can be a swing and miss with that selection. He has upside, but there is a lot of negative history coming along. The Tigers reached on this one, most experts didn't even have him as a first round pick.

Lions and tigers both going to the gator well Detroit Gators

Where did you read that? Lol. I read the Tigers got a steal in this kid. Power arm, future #1 in a rotation. Only downfall was a couple minor knee surgeries but bounced back nicely and was an Ace for the Gators. Supposedly there was even talk of him going #1 overall before his setbacks. I love this pick

Now this pick is a f'n reach; could have been had in rounds 4 or 5. Sounds like another Moya.
Dumb Bastards who wanted this guy in the second round should be fired.

It is the rating on the velocity before the knee surgeries. After surgeries, he has not regained those velocities. While considered to be a "power" arm, he only tops out at about 92-94 with his fastball and a high of 87 on his slider. Not sure where you saw him going #1. But yes, by many, they thought he was a high first rounders (i.e. ESPN), where I go the sites that tended to think otherwise. He ranked 4th for RHP at Baseball America if that helps.

"There are still some concerns with Faedo’s profile, of course. Some scouts don’t like his delivery, which can be a bit jerky at times."

"If Faedo can regain his old velocity and smooth out his mechanics, he’s a fairly sure bet to reach the majors in some capacity. He has the stuff to be a lockdown reliever or a solid mid-rotation starter."

There are plenty of drafted players in years past that had or exceeded Faedo's stats and not panned out. His delivery screams "Tommy John". Will he end that way? Lord knows. But as I said, yes he has upside, and if he smooths out his delivery, his ceiling is mid-Rotation.

Faedo was picked to go in the top 10, the velo should come back with more regularity as his knees get better and as he matures a bit more physically.
I don't mind this pick,
it's the second round pick that has me pulling what little hair I have left on my head out with these dumb shits drafting a 4th or 5th rounder in the second round.

Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of positive articles about the Faedo pick. Also saw that he hit 97 last night for Florida. I guess if you look hard enough, there's always some negative to be found.

Faedo: I disapprove of his arm action and I consider him an injury risk with surgery as the solution, especially if he's hitting 97 with it.

I think you were the one that doesn't like Fulmer's either....am I right?

I always thought Max had the most violent delivery. Is his similar to these guys?

In some ways, yes, with the flow of his delivery (or lack of it). But his low arm/elbow slot is a significant difference that protects his arm. Fulmer and Faedo have that "scapular load" that forms a "W" and a lot of MLB pitchers who apply that motion have injured their arms. I think its just a matter of time.

But it isn't looking hard enough. These questions exist and they have been public. It is like anything else. Informed is informed. But then again, unlike some, I cannot have a differing opinion and a reason for that opinion.
