Problems with the Tigers

A 1-half wonder at this point, I knew he's been struggling but I just looked at his second half numbers, and yuck. 119 PA 7 runs, 27 hits, 6 doubles, 0 triples, 0 HR .237/.254/.298/.544 0 SB, 2BB, 14K

Yet Cabrera is the guy everyone is bagging on for not getting it done. (.317/.386/.426/.812)
First mention of miggys struggles in this thread, I think that's a huge part of it. .812 ops from miggy is terrible, changes everything if he's hitting. Some of those leads Nathan blew would have been bigger, we'd have more big innings, also, the batter in front of him would get more pitches to hit. It's possible that injury cost us two world series titles

And a big bag of money.

Bot 1st: M Cabrera flied out to right.
What will he be like should V-Mart not resign with the Tigers?
Which leads to the Tigers have to replace/resign three key players V-Mart DH, Hunter,RF,Scherzer Front line STARTER! And now with Verlander's Armor with a dent just how important will/does that become?

We got some poor walkers batting 1,2!

Unless you picked them to revisit the ALCS or World Series, there's no reason to worry. I picked them to lose in the ALDS and I still have faith we will enter the playoffs.

We are out of the playoffs as of now. R U worry yet?

All this talk of walk rates....

Detroit is currently 10th in walks in the AL. The 3 teams at the very bottom.......Baltimore, Seattle and KC.

1 common thing that ALL the teams currently above us in the playoff standings......EVERY SINGLE ONE of them have had better pitching than us.

ranking of AL teams in terms of walks that are not in the playoffs as of today

2,3,4,5,6,7,9,10,11,12

The primary problem with the Tigers is they've been scoring less runs than their opponents in games more often than not lately.

It's a combination of the pitching being less good than the opponents' pitching more often than not, and the hitting being less good than the opponents' hitting more often than not.

Until this trend reverses, things are not going to get better; in fact, things will probably continue to get worse.

Tigers have been
Shutout...........6 Times. (all losses)
1 Run scored.....12 Times......(1 win).
2 Runs scored...21 Times.......(4 wins).
3 Runs scored...11 Times.......(1 Win).

So that is a
0-6
1-11
4-17
1-10
-------------
6-44 when they score less then 4 runs.. Pretty sure Rebbiv has brought this up alot..
The team really is all or nothing type of hitting team that has really falling on its face in who huge stretches this season.. Plus the starters have not been as good as we thought and the pen is at a all-time worse which has to be hard even by Tiger standards....LOL

The team needs a spark DD..... Find someone fast please!!!!!!!!!!!

I know some don't like the walk rate stat but if you're not hitting maybe you can at least work the count and get on base via a walk. That's the reason I like the walk.

Yup. Having an understanding that 2/3 of ALL American League wins over the last 5-10 years come when a team scores 5 runs or more, the easy answer is just to score 5 runs.

DET

2011 95 Wins 62-17 .784 WPCT 65.3% of wins 48.8% of games 5 runs

2012 88 Wins 63-13 .829 WPCT 71.6% of wins 46.9% of games 5 runs

2013 93 Wins 69-11 .863 WPCT 74.2% of wins 49.4% od games 5 runs

3 year 276 Wins 194-41 .826 WPCT 70.3% of wins 48.4% of games 5 runs

2014 66 Wins 45-6 .882 WPCT 68.2% of wins 41.8% of games

Assuming DET scored 5 runs at 48.4% this year, the increase in wins would be 7 wins. Or, they should have 72 wins.

Also, when they started 27-12, they were 18-1 when scoring 5 runs. That was still 66.7% of the wins, but 48.7% of the games.

Since then, DET has 41 Wins 27-5 65.9% of wins, but 38.6% of games 5 runs

Going to speed players took away OBP and killed the team's ability to consistently score 5 runs.

Just like we figured it probably would. And the speed is hurting, not helping, because our team is stupidly aggressive.

The average runs per game in the AL is 4.24 runs. If you score 5 or more runs you are going to win a lot of games. Most teams don't score that many runs on a consistent basis. This is why the average is only 4.24

Brilliant observation.

However, ALL AL teams get 2/3 of their wins when they score 5 runs or more. What element of that statement don't you understand?

I understand it perfectly. What I am saying is it isn't surprising given the league average runs scored per game.
