The Tigers are now 10.5 games back of the first place Royals and 4.5 games back of the last wild card spot….and only 1 game ahead of the 4th place Indians. We are actually closer to last place in the entire AL (3.5 games) than we are to the last wild card spot.

This 4 game series could be the final nail in this season’s coffin. This is the first time the Tigers have been below .500 since we started the 2013 season 1-2 and the first time they’ve been under .500 in the second half of the season since Oct 2, 2010. Tigers are 23-25 at home and the Mariners are 22-23 on the road. The Mariners have the worst winning percentage in the AL. They are 11-6 at Comerica since 2010. The Tigers get to avoid Felix Hernandez again.

“Big Pasta” is 4-2 with a 3.12 era in 8 starts at home this year but he’s pretty much been atrocious since the death of his father at the end of May. He’s given up at least 5 earned runs in his last 5 starts and his season era has climbed 1.95 from those 5 games. However, his lone win in those 5 games came against Seattle on July 6th. The Tigers won that game 12-5. His last start against Minnesota was his shortest outing of the season lasting just 2.1 innings. He has a 10.54 era in his 3 July starts.

Haap will be making his 2nd consecutive starts against the Tigers. He faced the Tigers back on July 8th and got a no decision after lasting just 4 innings and allowing 7 hits and 4 runs. He has a 2-3 record and 5.59 era in 9 road starts this season. Haap is 1-4 with a 5.93 era in his last 6 starts.

Current Tigers are hitting .267 (16 for 60) with 5 doubles and 1 home run against Haap. Marte is 2-2 with a home run. Castellanos is 3 for 4 and Cespedes is 3 for 16. The Tigers hit 9 home runs in the 3 games series against the Mariners earlier this month.

The Mariners are batting .207 (16 for 54) with 4 doubles and 2 home runs against Simon. Cano is 4 for 9 and Cruz and Morrison each have homered of him. The Mariners are last in the AL in batting average (.235) and OBP (.295) and have scored the 2nd fewest runs.

Castellanos is listed as day to day with a black eye and left cheek contusion after fielding an Adam Jones ground ball with his face yesterday. He also suffered a hyper-extended left finger in the process. Cespedes has a tight quad muscle. Both are starting tonight.

The weather forecast call for temps around the 80 degree mark and a slight chance of rain later in the game.

Great catch by Cespedes on the 1st play of the game. Simon gives up a walk in the 1st.

Since June 1st

Price/Sanchez 13-3
3,4,5 starters 4-19

If they aren't going to pack it in now might be a good time to go try and get a couple of better back end of the rotation guys to replace Simon and Greene

Simon can't command the strike zone for shit

I mean think about it how are you ever supposed to get on a role if you just keep running that same lousy 3,4,5 out there..the results are the same pretty much every time

Jesus, Simon can't even handle the bottom of the order of a terrible lineup

32 pitch 2nd inning for Simon. He's very lucky he only gave up 2 runs.

This is what we have to look forward to. Simon, Greene and a struggling JV. God help us.

So how does McCann get doubled off of 2nd base on a fly ball to CF???

He thought it was going to drop in front of Jackson...
It didn't, it was a low liner that carried just a little bit too far. I think Jackson was playing in on it

You know, we talk about all that went wrong, well a lot went right too. Iglesias, JD, As Cespedas have all been All Stars or all star caliber. James MCCann has been a revelation, might be one of the best young catchers in the game. And yet, we are still sub .500. If not for some good unexpected things we could easily be 15 games under .500.

Yup. The starting pitching is what really changed for this team.

Gidp #98 ends the 4th

16 more than any other team but the good news they haven't had tons of them lately and are currently now no longer on pace to break the single season record..barely...for now
