Unofficial Thoughts and Reflections on the Loss thread

Injuries were my fear as the season wore on. Oh, well, Michigan's D had been knocking out opposing QBs all year; guess it was only a matter of time before it happened to us. Onward and upward.

I was reading the posts in the Speight injury thread from yesterday.

Ok, ok. I'm looking at it today and people seem far more reasonable. The thread is about how much they should go with Peppers vs OKorn and it looks like consensus is "very little Peppers, since OKorn is already more mobile."

M has like 34 QBs on scholarship for this reason. Plug and play!

The Pepcat should be scrapped. Put him in at RB behind O'Korn. He has great vision and is a home run threat from the RB position. Plus, he's an extremely dangerous decoy in the play action passing game.

Our coaches are too smart to not figure this out.

Yep, or line him up in the slot

One of the things I find irritating is that they don't use him as a decoy enough. 99% of the time he is out there, he's getting the ball and running it around the end.

How about putting him out there a few times and NOT have him get the ball?

Man, I wish they weren't splitting reps. Would be nice if one of them was the obvious pick and get the vast majority of the work. But who knows, I guess it didn't say "evenly" and like anything else could be full of shit.

But yeah, no idea what's up with Isaac, he looked very strong on his one run and it was obvious that Smith wasn't going to get it going. With regards to Peppers, I'm 100% on board with using him on offense, but why not get him into space more? I'd much rather have him on the edge catching a short pass trying to juke/run over a DB than optioning off D-linemen and LB's.

I don't understand the Ty Isaac thing either.

Of all the game time performances to judge on film, RB should be one of the easiest.

The only thing I can think of is he's getting dinged for attitude in practice or bad pass blocking or something. I get that the coaches have to enforce discipline and can't do that if they are granting exceptions to some guys.

if it's not that... I dunno. Maybe they forgot about him?

and I agree on Peppers... it looks like everything we do with him has been scouted, and he's fast, but not fast enough to get to the edge if the LBs take a good angle. use him as a decoy or a slot receiver or not at all going forward.

that's how Carr used Woodson on offense, as a receiver. maybe they tried that in practice and figured he was better as an RB, or couldnt play receiver, I don't know. But I'd only use him as an RB if he were better than all 4 of our starters at that position, and I don't know if that's true. maybe he's the quickest? Seems like Evans could challenge him for that.

I think using Peppers on offense as much as we have seen was to give him an opportunity to create some Heisman highlights, which would have been good for the program long term if it had worked. I don't think we'll see a lot of Peppers on offense vs OSU.

I'd prefer Peppers focus on defense and special teams and not play offense at all.

I am fully on board with this going forward.

I also think to the extent him getting reps on offense hurt his defensive performance, it's been a big mistake. and if we DID need him on offense up to this point in the season, it's just been masking other offensive weaknesses we shouldve addressed.

I don't expect us to repeat these mistakes. Under Hoke we would; not Harbaugh.

Bo would not have played a player 3 ways to generate Heisman Hype... The Team, The Team...

This would be ideal.

Peppers is at 47 (21 rush, 2 rec, 16 punt returns, 8 kick returns) total touches already. That doesn't include all of the plays where he just hands it off as the Wildcat QB.

Woodson only had 14 (11 rush, 3 rec) offensive touches during his Heisman year. He had 33 punt returns. 47 total touches.

Peppers is not Woodson. He is a special player, but not to Woodson's level. I agree that he would be better served concentrating on just two areas of the game and maybe getting some very spot work on offense the way Woodson did. Woodson did not spend as much time on the offensive side of the ball as Peppers.

It would be interesting to see the average yards per play for when Peppers is on the field compared to when he's not. I'd bet that it's lower with him in.

That said, I'd still rather tweak his contributions than trash them. Reduce the number of touches, but increase the big play opportunity. I appreciate the possibility that it takes away from his defense, but it may be more beneficial than ever to use him so it takes some of the load off of the new QB's shoulders.

Win out and Win it all.

Not a bad spot to be in during Year 2 of the Harbaugh era.

I full on disagree with this.

Peppers should be made the starting quarterback and Michigan should run every play from scrimmage out of the wildcard formation.

Everyplace should be off tackle left or off tackle right to keep the defense on it's heels as to what direction the play is going.

Maybe every now and then Peppers should just run it right up the middle.

Rod Richriguez called and wants his playbook back.
