Totally Tigers
Over the winter, it was reported that the Detroit Tigers inquired about St. Louis Cardinal Nolan Arenado who plays 3B. It was said that he would only approve a trade to a top contender which did not include the Tigers. In fact, he refused a trade to the Astros.
The Cards are still interested in trading him due to the need to cut finances and the wish to make their roster younger.
But now the Tigers are MLB’s winningest team. Would Arenado now approve a trade to Detroit?
Nolan just turned 34 years old and is owed 3 years left on his contract -$74 mill. It is expected that St. Louis would eat some of that contract.
He is still a strong defender, tied for 5th in MLB with +3 DRS.
However, his offense has been slipping. He’s currently hitting .242/.313/.382/.695 with 5 HRs and 21 RBIs. It should be noted that he recently asked the Cards to drop him in the batting order to #6.
However, Nolan walks a lot, strikes out below MLB average and puts the ball in play at an above-average rate.
So how would he fit the Tigers?
Third base is the most obvious way the Tigers can improve their roster. Those who have played the position for Detroit have a .597 OPS which ranks 25th in MLB. It is the weakest position in the Tigers’ roster.
If the Tigers don’t trade for him, they would rely upon Javier Baez, Zach McKinstry and Matt Vierling to hold down the position. There is no one in the minors close to being able to play 3B at the MLB level.
Should the Tigers make a trade for Arenado or stick with what they have now?
