DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

There continues to be expectations that MLB will lock out players on December 1st, 2026. Negotiations for the new CBA have started but are still in the exploratory phase. Official meetings will not start until spring.
The issues needing to be addressed are significant. The Players’ Union wants better compensation for their younger players as well as earlier free agency. Owners are looking to get a salary floor and increase the luxury tax as they seek to control spending and address the revenue disparities among the 30 teams. Both sides are in direct conflict with each other.
So how does the thought that there is a good chance the 2027 baseball season will be shortened or cancelled impact what teams do this off-season?
If there is a strike, the players will not receive their salaries. If there is a partial season, salaries will be prorated. However, there are the issues surrounding age and requiring players a longer time to get back up to speed. Sometimes a disruption in the flow of a regular season can also mess with how teams perform overall.
Here’s an example to consider: If a team signs a significant free agent to a multi-year contract, that team could potentially miss out on one of that player’s best years. He would play in 2026 but then miss some or all of 2027 which would be considered to be one of his best years and a reason why he was signed. When he returns later in 2027 – or 2028 – he’d be a year older and would be impacted by not having played for a long time.
Could this situation make a team hesitant to sign a player like this?
If you were the GM, would your winter plans to acquire players for more than a couple years change? Would you decide to focus on signing players for just a year or two because of the uncertainty of a strike?
Or would you shrug that all off and do business as usual?
Today’s blog addresses this issue and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Ready?

Do you think that the expected strike will alter how GMs build their rosters this winter?

1. Yes, they will be more cautious.

2. No, it will be business as usual.
