Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 4 Million Views!!!! Thankyou!

February 4 in Tigers and mlb history:

1882: National League players are now responsible for carrying their own bats and uniforms on road trips. They are also required to purchase and keep clean two complete uniforms, including the white linen ties to be worn on the field at all times.

1893: The first recorded version of Casey at the Bat, as recited by Russell Hunting, hits the music charts. DeWolf Hopper's more famous version will not be released until October 1906.

1915: The New York Yankees purchase Wally Pipp and Hugh High from the Detroit Tigers for a reported $5,000 each. Baseball historian Lyle Spatz (Yankees Coming, Yankees Going) writes that this was the first of some promised funneling of ball players to the recently-sold Yankees franchise.

1922: Joe Harris, formerly with the Cleveland Indians, is reinstated by Judge Landis because of his good World War I record. Harris had been on the ineligible list for having played with and against ineligible players in independent games. "His service in France, where he was gassed after bitter fighting, caused him to do things he might not have done," says Judge Landis in reinstating him. Last December, Harris was traded by Cleveland along with "Tioga" George Burns and Elmer Smith to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Stuffy McInnis.

1934: The National Recovery Administration says athletes advertising athletic goods must actually use them or advertisers will lose the NRA Blue Eagle and be fined.

1942: The Tigers release longtime star second baseman Charlie Gehringer. Gehringer played his entire 19 year career with the Tigers. The "Mechanical Man' has led the league in runs twice, hits twice, doubles twice, stolen bases and batting average. With seven 200 hit seasons, one of 6 players with 60 or more doubles in a season, an MVP Award in 1937, Gehringer considered an all-time top 5 second baseman, is voted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1949.

1956: The Major Leagues vote to establish the Cy Young Memorial Award for the outstanding pitcher of the year. At first, there will be one award for both major leagues.

1956: The American League says it will test the automatic intentional walk during spring training.

1957: Manager Joe McCarthy and outfielder Sam Crawford are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America. McCarthy, the winningest manager in major league history, won nine pennants and four consecutive World Championships with the New York Yankees. Crawford, one of the greatest hitters of the deadball era, finished his career with 309 triples, first on the all-time list out of 2,961 hits.

1958: The Hall of Fame fails to enshrine any new members for the first time since 1950.

1960: The BBWAA voters fail to elect a new Hall of Fame member. Edd Roush gets 146 votes, but 202 are necessary for election. Sam Rice (143) and Eppa Rixey (142) are next in line. All three will eventually be elected.

1962: Roberto Clemente accepts Pittsburgh's annual "Dapper Dan Award", acknowledging both Pirate fans and fellow Pirates in the process. Les Biederman writes in The Sporting News: "Clemente, the Pirates' National League batting champion, gave credit to the encouragement of the Pittsburgh fans for his feats in 1961 that earned him the Dapper Dan Award at the 26th annual banquet before more than 2,000 persons (all male) at the Hilton Hotel. The Puerto Rican, who climaxed his greatest season in the majors with a .351 batting average, accepted the plaque from Dapper Dan President Al Abrams, sports editor of the sponsoring Post Gazette, and responded to a standing ovation with a moving and sincere speech. 'Without the fans' encouragement here, I never could win this award,' Clemente told the hushed crowd. 'This award belongs to the fans and my teammates as much as it does to me.'"

1969: Attorney and Bowel Brain of the highest order, Bowie Kuhn is named commissioner, succeeding William 'Spike' Eckert.
Kuhn receives a one-year contract paying him $100,000. Major league owners turned to Kuhn after failing to agree on either of two other candidates, Mike Burke of the New York Yankees and Chub Feeney of the San Francisco Giants. The early favorite, John McHale, took his name out of the running early, as he had accepted the job of President of the expansion Montreal Expos a short time before Eckert was ousted.

1971: Commissioner and Huge Shithead Bowie Kuhn announces former Negro League players will have a separate wing in the Hall of Fame. Due to the controversy the announcement causes, it is decided inclusion in regular Hall of Fame is more fitting and more of an honor for the former black players.

1976: Federal Judge John W. Oliver upholds a recent decision by arbitrator Peter Seitz, who had granted free agency to pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally. Both players had challenged baseball's reserve clause.

1987: The Detroit Tigers signed Bill Laskey as a free agent.
1987: The Detroit Tigers signed Mike Stenhouse as a free agent.

1991: The 12 members of the board of directors of the Hall of Fame vote unanimously to ban Pete Rose from the ballot. Rose will become eligible again only if the commissioner reinstates him by December, 2005 - which will not happen.

1994: The Detroit Tigers signed Kirk Gibson as a free agent.

2004: Avoiding an arbitration hearing, the St. Louis Cardinals and Albert Pujols agree to a $100 million, seven-year deal. The 24-year slugging 1B/OF, who hit .359 with 43 home runs and 124 RBI in 2003, was the runner up to Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants in National League MVP voting.

2020: The Red Sox and Dodgers engineer an old-fashioned blockbuster trade as Boston sends former MVP Mookie Betts and high-priced pitcher David Price to Los Angeles for OF Alex Verdugo and P Kenta Maeda. Boston then flips Maeda to the Twins for another prospect, P Brusdar Graterol, while L.A. clears some space in its outfield by dealing Joc Pederson to the Angels for IF Luis Rengifo. The deal is clearly designed to get Boston under the luxury tax threshold, at the cost of being competitive in the short term, but it will hit a snag when the Red Sox are dissatisfied with Graterol's health condition. It will be completed on February 9th with Graterol joining the Dodgers, and a few prospects changing teams to even things out. However, the Pederson for Rengifo deal will fall through as a result of the delay in the main deal.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Yesterday, Totally Tigers covered the evolving situation between Tarik Skubal and his agent, Scott Boras, and the Detroit Tigers.
To quickly recap, the Tigers made an extension offer back in 2024 and it was turned down. Recently, both sides exchanged arbitration numbers. On average, cases that go before an arbitration panel have a difference of $1 mill. For Tarik Skubal, the difference is $13 mill.
The Tigers attempted to submit 2 other numbers to Scott Boras but he refused to return their phone calls.
The arbitration process has nothing to do with the free agency process and players who are still under team control, like Skubal, are compared with other team-controlled players from previous years. Thus, Skubal cannot be compared with any current free agents or their salaries. The Tigers initially offered a record amount for a pitcher, almost doubling Skubal’s salary, but dropped it when the other side refused to engage.
Scott Boras is looking to more than triple Tarik’s current salary. He’s also looking to set a record arbitration amount and is planning on using a loophole (which has never been used) in the CBA to get it. He wants to compare Skubal with notable free agents and not players under team control.
It’s known that he is hoping to significantly change the arbitration process for the upcoming CBA. Skubal is the test case and he also sits on the Executive Committee of the MLBPA.
To his credit, Tarik has won back-to-back Cy Young Awards but did it while under team control, not via a regular contract. Historically, there are stats supporting both sides’ arguments for a new salary. The Players’ Union is partnering with Boras while MLB is advising the Tigers.
Being under team control means that the organization still maintains their rights over the player. The purpose of the arbitration process is to allow teams to build a roster and retain the talent for a certain period of time before losing said player to free agency.
While the Tigers have remained quiet about the process, Scott Boras has not and has attacked the Tigers multiple times in the press. Skubal himself has said he has no control over the process but he is the client.
At this point in time, how do you feel about Tarik? Are you on his side, unhappy with his stance or somewhere in-between?

Given the circumstances surrounding the arbitration process, how do you currently feel about Tarik Skubal?

1. He deserves every penny he can get.

2. Not happy with either side.

3. Disappointed that Skubal is not controlling how this plays out.

Days of Roar Tigers Podcast: Inside Detroit Tigers' rebuild: Al Avila opens up about ownership, failed. 82 minutes.

Pitchers and catchers from the Detroit Tigers report to spring training in eight days, but before the focus shifts to the 2026 season, former general manager Al Avila (responsible for 25 players on the current 40-man roster) joins "Days of Roar" for more than an hour to discuss the Tigers' rebuild, along with other takeaways from his more than 20 years with the Tigers, including the final seven seasons in charge of baseball operations. Topics with Avila include Mike Ilitch vs. Chris Ilitch, the J.D. Martinez and Justin Verlander trades in 2017, who would've been the manager if A.J. Hinch had joined the Chicago White Sox, Carlos Correa and Javier Báez during the 2021-22 offseason and getting fired (then being asked to stay) in August 2022. He also took deep dives into draft pick decisions such as Jackson Jobe over Marcelo Mayer, Jace Jung over Zach Neto and Riley Greene over CJ Abrams, plus the scouting process for No. 1 overall picks Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene. Aside from the Avila interview, Evan Petzold and Chris Brown discuss Tarik Skubal's upcoming arbitration hearing, the ongoing pursuit of mid-tier starters — and if there's any chance Framber Valdez falls into the Tigers' lap.

The Tigers are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mickey Lolich and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. One of the finest pitchers in franchise history, Lolich was a three-time All-Star who pitched for Detroit for 13 seasons and holds several Tigers team records. He was a member of the 1968 World Series Champion Tigers team, earning World Series MVP honors after posting a 3-0 record with a 1.67 ERA. Lolich will be remembered as one of the most durable and dominant left-handed pitchers of his era and a cornerstone of Detroit’s pitching staff for more than a decade.

Mickey Lolich made his last public appearance at Comerica Park in 2023. He was in a wheelchair. When he left, he insisted on standing up to say goodbye. Willie Horton & Mickey Stanley helped lift him up and he waved goodbye. Photo taken by person who was there, feeling the gravity of the moment.

A statement from Willie Horton on the passing of his teammate Mickey Lolich:

RIP Mickey Lolich. In 1971, Lolich put up 8.5 WAR, 308 strikeouts, and an almost unthinkable 45 games started, going 25–14 with a 2.92 ERA. A workhorse ace in every sense, a season that simply doesn’t exist in today’s game. One of the best to wear number 29.

Mickey Lolich’s legacy, on and off the field, will forever be cherished.

I was blessed to spend an hour with Willie Horton. He told me that the first time he showed up to spring ball, he was not allowed to get a taxi to the stadium because he was black. He said Lolich and Kaline found out and drove him everywhere. He said they made sure he was always safe and got wherever he needed. He said they very publicly played basketball together in their free time at a time when most white guys wouldn’t do that. Mickey was the real deal in every sense of the word.

Sharing a piece I had written about Mickey Lolich, who passed away today at the age of 85.
John Keating

"Mickey Lolich was starting with one less day of rest. He pitched the first two innings like a man defusing a live bomb, working slowly and unhappily, and studying the problem at length before each new move.”
Roger Angell.

“When we got to the World Series, the people of St. Louis were convinced that the Tigers were no match for their team. I met Bob Gibson at an autograph signing function years later and he told me that as far as St. Louis was concerned, the 1968 World Series never happened.
”Mickey Lolich."

Mickey Lolich was far from a conventional athlete. Labeled as too heavy, too slow, and too unconventional, Lolich was dismissed by scouts and sportswriters early in his career. But with a devastating fastball and deceptive left-handed delivery, he steadily rose through the ranks, eventually joining the Detroit Tigers in 1963. Over the next 13 seasons, Mickey Lolich would become one of the most durable pitchers of his era, known for throwing complete games with near-superhuman consistency. Lolich won 14 games and started 30+ games for 11 years straight (1964-1974). His HOF credentials rival some who are there and I think he deserves some consideration.
3.44 ERA, over 200 wins and over 2,800 Ks. World Series MVP. In my HOF!!! Go easy.
Jim Koenigsberger

Just spoke with Denny McLain, who said of his longtime Tigers teammate Mickey Lolich: "He had the greatest arm I've ever seen in my life. The guy could pitch every day, every hour, every minute, and not worry about any pain. The guy was just unbelievable."
Tony Paul

There are only 18 LHP in the HOF. Mickey Lolich never got the consideration he earned - certainly at the same level as Rube Marquard, Eppa Rixey, Jim Kaat.
And he treated everybody on that field with respect.
Keith Olbermann

Mickey Lolich baseball cards 1940-2026.

Mickey Lolich dying the day of Skubal’s arbitration is pretty ironic. Lolich would probably have gone longer in Game 5 vs Seattle than Skubal did.
Jeff Moss

Mickey Lolich's 1968 season ended well but only after some turbulence.
In August 1968, Mickey Lolich was banished to the Tigers' bullpen. Two months later he became a World Series hero.
Greg Eno

Mickey Lolich started 496 games during his career and threw a complete game in 195 of them. Absolute Workhorse.

February 5 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox announce they will play a series of 15 pre-season games against each other.

1916: The National League meeting announces that it has come to the league's attention that "some of the diamonds" don't measure properly. On this day, John Heydler's office circulates to clubs the news of the Chicago Cubs' pitching distance, and orders an engineer's certification.

1921: The New York Yankees purchase 10 acres of land in the Bronx. The Yankees will use the land as the site for their new park, which will be called Yankee Stadium.

1924: Jim Campbell born in Huron, Ohio. Worked for 43 seasons in the Detroit Tigers front office, including 11 as team president.

1928: The Philadelphia Athletics signed Tris Speaker as a free agent.

1931: Chicago Cubs outfielder Hack Wilson, who set National League marks for home runs (56) and RBI (191) in 1930, signs for $35,000. His RBI record is still standing today.

1934: Hank Aaron is born in Mobile, Alabama. After a one-year stint with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro Leagues and two years in the minors, Aaron will make his major league debut with the Milwaukee Braves on his way to set the major league record 755 home runs.

1935: At 39 years of age, home run king Babe Ruth is released by the New York Yankees. He will sign with the Boston Braves to play one more season, but will not complete it.

1937: The Detroit Tigers released General Crowder.

1968: Second baseman Roberto Alomar is born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the son of major league IF Sandy Alomar. One of the best fielders ever at the position, he will also be a top hitter, with 9 seasons with a .300 average, and 6 with 100 or more runs scored.

1991: The Minnesota Twins signed Jack Morris as a free agent.

1999: Major League Baseball will honor each league's best hitter with an award named after Hank Aaron. The all-time home run king learns about the honor on his 65th birthday at an event which includes US President Bill Clinton and Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Reggie Jackson.

2002: Major League Baseball announces the withdrawal of its plan for contraction this upcoming season, but the sport is still determined to eliminate two teams in 2003. Attempts to contract the Minnesota Twins and Montreal Expos this season could not be accomplished due to a series of legal decisions and fierce opposition from the Players Association.

2002: The Houston Astros file a motion in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, asking the court to determine whether the 30-year naming agreement with Enron signed in 1999 should continue.
The team does not want to call its stadium Enron Field any longer due to the financial burden placed on many Houston-area residents caused by the bankrupt energy company's disputable business practices.

2003: The Detroit Tigers signed Wilkin Ramirez as an amateur free agent.

2006: Tiger Stadium hosts Bud Bowl as part of Detroit's Super Bowl festivities.

2008: The Texas Rangers traded Armando Galarraga to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Hernandez (minors).

2020: The Detroit Tigers signed Chris Smith as a free agent.

2021: The Chicago Cubs selected Sergio Alcántara off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.
2021: The Detroit Tigers signed Jonathan Schoop as a free agent.

2021: The Baseball Writers Association of America announces the result of its members' vote regarding the renaming of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for excellence in baseball writing. 97% of members vote to change the name, as the award's association with the late J.G. Taylor Spink, former publisher of The Sporting News, is no longer acceptable given Spink's openly racist views and opposition to integration. The award will now be known as the BBWAA Career Excellence Award.

2024: The Detroit Tigers selected Kolton Ingram off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

2024: The Royals grant the longest contract in team history to young star Bobby Witt Jr., inking him for a minimum of 11 years, until 2034, and up to 14 (to 2037) if various options are exercised. The contract will guarantee Witt a minimum of $288.7 million and up to $377.7 million and makes him the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future.
