Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 4 Million Views!!!! Thankyou!

Framber Valdez should thrive with the Detroit Tigers.
Valdez will enjoy better catching and a bit friendlier home park, but infield defense will take at least a minor hit.
Always a good informative read with Brandon Day at BYBTB

Detroit Tigers top prospect SS Kevin McGonigle was announced as a Spring Training invite today. A.J. Hinch talked about the possibility of McGonigle making the Tigers opening day roster back at the Winter Meetings.

Tigers are now outspending the other four AL Central teams by an average of $97 million in 2026 payroll. And no one else in the division is within $55 million.

If Skubal wins his arb case, the Tigers would be up around $230M, about $14M short of the CBT. Normal regular season roster moves usually add a couple million or so, trade deadline additions could move things pretty close.

1934: New York sportswriter and broadcaster Ford Frick is named the public relations director of the National League. In nine months, Frick will become the league's President and will later become commissioner, succeeding Happy Chandler.
Frick had previously played an instrumental role in promoting the birth of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

1934: The Cincinnati Reds purchase 43-year-old pitcher Dazzy Vance from the St. Louis Cardinals for $7,500. The future Hall of Famer will pitch for two more seasons, although he will only make two starts for the Reds and he will be waived back to St. Louis in midseason.

1935: Demanding a yearly salary of $25,000, future Hall of Fame pitcher Dizzy Dean becomes a holdout. The St. Louis Cardinals' right-handed ace will sign for $19,500 the following day.

1958: Ted Williams signs a one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox. Reports on the worth of the contract estimate it between $135,000 to $150,000. Either way, Williams becomes the highest-paid player in major league history.

1975: The Detroit Tigers released Jim Nettles.

1976: The American League grants the new expansion franchise in Seattle to a six-man investment group that includes movie star and entertainer Danny Kaye. The new franchise, to be called the Mariners, will start play in 1977.

1995: US President Bill Clinton's deadline for a resolution to the baseball strike passes without a resolution. On January 26th, Clinton had told the players and owners to resume bargaining and reach an agreement by today. The strike will continue for nearly two more months.

2004: The Detroit Tigers signed Ivan Rodriguez as a free agent.

2007: The Detroit Tigers signed Aquilino Lopez as a free agent.

2009: The Detroit Tigers signed Ruddy Lugo as a free agent.

2012: The Detroit Tigers signed Brent Dlugach as a free agent.

2014: Hall of Fame slugger Ralph Kiner dies at age 91; in addition to his on-field exploits, Kiner was a New York Mets broadcaster from the team's inaugural season in 1962, although he had slowed his pace considerably following health issues in recent years.

2016: The Detroit Tigers signed Luke Carlin as a free agent.

2024: Two franchise icons sign extensions today, with José Altuve agreeing to a five-year deal with the Astros, effective a year from today, that practically ensures he will finish his career with the team. It is estimated at $125 million. Also re-upping with his old team is P Clayton Kershaw, who agrees to terms with the Dodgers, although in his case he will likely miss the first half of the upcoming season after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery.

THE VERDICT.
Totally Tigers

Early this afternoon (Thursday), the arbitration panel rendered judgement on Tarik Skubal’s salary for the 2026 season. Skubal will be earning $32 million.

What are the earliest takeaways?

1. Tarik will be gone no matter what after the 2026 season. Maybe even before the season ends.

2. Skubal is the secondary story. The bigger story is setting a precedent to weaken the arbitration system and lessen the control franchises have with team control.

3. Scott Boras used a loophole in the current CBA to break the current arbitration system using Skubal as his test case. He is on the record as being immensely opposed to it and is working with the MLBPA to change the system for the next CBA.

4. The arbitration system now will be one of the biggest bones of contention for both sides as they negotiate a new CBA. This could easily delay the 2027 season.

5. Any significant changes to the arbitration system will make it harder for teams to keep young talent. It will become harder to build a core roster.

6. It is still unclear whether the signing of Framber Valdez was to give the Tigers a 1-2 punch in the rotation or to serve as Skubal’s replacement if and when he leaves. We’ll learn more over the coming weeks.
