White Sox 7 - Tigers 1: The beatings continue, morale has not improved.
The Tigers offense sleepwalked through this one and the pitching staff eventually crumbled.
BYBTB

Free-falling Detroit Tigers lose their eighth consecutive series.
The Tigers have lost 20 of 24 games and are 15 games under .500 for the first time since August 2023. And, worse yet, there still are 103 more games to go.
Another day, another dud. Copy, paste.
The Tigers have lost their eighth consecutive series, sealed by a 7-1 sleepwalking setback on the South Side to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday afternoon at Rate Field.
The Tigers now have lost 20 of their last 24 games. They're 15 games under .500 (22-37) for the first time since August 2023. They're 6-21 in May. They're 8-23 on the road. And maybe the worst stat of all — there are 103 more games of whatever this is. Have mercy.

Tigers’ slide reaches 2019 levels in another loss to White Sox.
The Detroit Tigers are playing like it’s 2019 — and that’s not a good thing.
The Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at Rate Field, ensuring their eighth consecutive series loss, a streak not seen since 2019.
The Tigers (22-37) have dropped 20 of their last 24 games, ensuring this May will go down as the club’s worst month since 2019, when they lost 114 games and approached MLB records for futility.

May 31 in Tigers and mlb history:

1917: Ty Cobb collects three hits and starts what will be a 35-game hitting streak, the second longest of his storied career. Cobb hits .383 and wins his 10th batting title in 1917.
In all, Cobb will have five hitting streaks of 20 games or more in his 24-year career.

1925: Ty Cobb's 275th triple makes him the first player ever with 1,000 extra-base hits. He will finish his career with 1,136 extra-base hits, the all-time record until Babe Ruth passes him on June 21, 1931.

1927: There is an unassisted triple play for the second consecutive day in the major leagues. During the 9th inning of a game at Tiger Stadium, Detroit first baseman Johnny Neun completes the rare play by catching a Homer Summa line drive, tagging Charlie Jamieson between first and second, and then touching second before Glenn Myatt can return. Detroit beats the Indians, 1 - 0.

Babe Ruth presents New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell with his '36 MVP Award at the Polo Grounds! The Babe didn't provide any good luck as Carl's record 24 game win streak ended that day with a 10-3 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers!
His last defeat came on July 13, 1936, 1 - 0 to the Chicago Cubs.

1938: Lou Gehrig plays in his 2,000th consecutive game and collects a RBI single, helping the Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox, 12 - 5.

1944: Al Unser hits his only home run of the season, a pinch-hit grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, helping the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees, 6 - 2.

1956: Tigers beat Cleveland 7-4 on a walk-off 3-run home run by Charlie Maxwell in the bottom of the 9th.

1961: Batting for Carl Yastrzemski, Boston Red Sox pinch hitter Carroll Hardy bunts for a single in the 8th inning of 7 - 6 loss to the Yankees. Hardy will be the only player to pinch-hit for both Yastrzemski and Ted Williams.

1968: Willie Horton homers and Mickey Lolich pitches a 4-hit shutout with 8 Ks as Tigers win 1-0 over the yankees.

1969: Joe Sparma takes no-hitter into 9th inning, then hangs on for a 3-2 win over the Seattle Pilots.

1970: Luis Aparicio and Walt Williams of the Chicago White Sox each collect five hits in a 22 - 13 rout of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Williams also scores five times. Chicago (24) and Boston (16) collect 40 hits, one short of the American League record for two teams in a regular game set in 1950.

1976: Mark Fidrych pitches an 11-inning complete game and defeats the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-4. The victory is the third of the year for Fidrych, who goes on to win Rookie of the Year honors in the American League.

1977: Tigers beat the A's 5-2 at Tiger Stadium. In a rare start, John Hiller goes 8 strong innings.

1979: In his major league debut, with his brother Tom starting for the Blue Jays, Pat Underwood pitches 8 scoreless innings in the Tigers' 1-0 win.

1983: American League President Lee MacPhail suspends Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for one week, citing "repeated problems" with the outspoken owner's public criticism of umpires. Steinbrenner, who was fined $50,000 by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn during spring training for berating some National League umpires, cannot attend games or be in his Yankee Stadium office during the suspension.

1984: Off day. Tigers notes for from the Toledo Blade:

1996: The Atlanta Braves traded Anton French (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for Danny Bautista.

2010: The Tigers designate pitcher Dontrelle Willis for assignment. He seemed to have turned a corner in his comeback bid when he made the Tigers' starting rotation out of spring training, but has only won one game all season. This may not yet be the end of the line for the gregarious lefthander, though, as both the Diamondbacks and Marlins have shown interest in acquiring his services. On June 1st, Willis will be traded to Arizona for P Billy Buckner.

2016: Ian Kinsler hits his first career grand slam, but the Tigers suffer their 17th loss of the month. Miguel Cabrera, J.D. and Victor Martinez, and Justin Upton also homer.

2017: The Astros continue their torrid pace with a 17 - 5 beat down of the Twins at Target Field, their seventh straight win. They hit a season-high six homers, including a pair by George Springer, and now have 38 wins, five more than any other major league team. Their lead in the AL West is already 11 games.

2018: Ronny Rodriguez gets a hit in his first major league at bat, and finishes 2-for-4 in a 6-2 win over the Angels.

2023: Major League Baseball takes over production and distribution of local San Diego Padres television broadcasts, due to the failure of the local affiliate of Bally Sports, which is teetering on the verge of bankruptcy. MLB had made contingency plans for such an eventuality when Bally's financial troubles became public in February, and it is likely that many or all of the network's other regional cable networks will collapse in short order as well, leading to similar takeovers in those markets as well.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers signed reliever Kenley Jansen last December to a $9 mill contract and club option at $12 mill ($2 mill buyout) for 2027. Although he liked the Angels, who wanted him back, he chose Detroit because he was offered a more traditional closer role.
Jansen is chasing 500 career saves and ranks all-time behind Mariono Rivera and Trevor Hoffman. He’s got 483 so far.
Last year was a terrific year for him, going 5-4 with 29 saves and a 2.59 ERA. His WHIP was .949. These stats would have made him the best reliever by far in the Tigers’ 2025 bullpen.
Before hitting the IL last week, in 18 games (15 IP), Jansen has 1 win and 3 losses. His ERA is 4.80 and has a WHIP of 1.200. His ERA is the largest out of all the Tigers’ regular relievers.
This is Kenley’s 2nd time being injured. The first time did not require an IL stint however both injuries are in the same region.
Jansen is currently 38 years old but will be turning 39 this season. After Justin Verlander, he is the second oldest player on the team.
Given Kenley’s stats coming into Detroit, combined with personal factors and the Tigers’ need for a closer, was this a good move?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Ready?

Was signing Kenley Jansen a good move?

1. Yes, the Tigers needed to sign a true closer.

2. No, it's too risky to sign someone at that age.

What the Tigers can, and should, get in deadline deals for Skubal and Mize (and, by the way, there may be no 2027 season).
The Tigers can reassemble a playoff team for 2027 and beyond when deadline bidders for two pitching prizes could bring a relative bounty. One problem: December's lockout could quash baseball in 2027.

The Tigers have scored first in 35 of 60 games this season (58.3 percent).

Tigers swept in Chicago, fail to protect late lead again.
We'd say that one will leave a mark.
But, really, when you've spent an entire month getting beaten up every which way, who will even notice?
Despite excellent pitching from Keider Montero and another early lead, the Tigers were swept out of Chicago with a 2-1 loss to the White Sox on Sunday at Rate Field. The crowd of 28,764 chanted, "Detroit Sucks!" in the late innings, and, well, who can argue that right now?

A.J. Hinch decision backfires in Tigers' loss to White Sox for sweep.
At least May is over. The Detroit Tigers finished the month with a 6-22 record, featuring a minus-48 run differential.
It's their worst month since July 2019.
The Tigers lost, 2-1, to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, May 31, in the finale of the three-game series at Rate Field, the final blow in a series sweep.
Everything came crashing down when manager A.J. Hinch pulled right-hander Keider Montero at 65 pitches through six scoreless innings, replacing him with right-handed reliever Drew Anderson.

1906: Women appear at the Polo Grounds ticket windows for the first time. Coincidentally, new ticket-selling machines are also introduced.

1910: The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 10 - 5, before a chilly crowd of 800 fans at the Baker Bowl. It is the 14th loss for the Phillies in their last 15 games. The Cardinals are paced by leadoff hitter Miller Huggins, who has no official at bats in six plate appearances, the first time this has ever happened in major league history. Huggins walks in his first three at-bats, hits a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt in the next two, and walks with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to drive in the lead run. At the end of the season, Huggins will lead the National League with 116 walks.

1917: Hank Gowdy of the Boston Braves became the first major leaguer to enlist in World War I. Gowdy will also serve in World War II.

Tigers legends Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker joined Brad Galli for a look back at their 50-year friendship, including their historic 19-year bond as Detroit’s double-play combination, the 1984 World Series championship season, and Trammell’s optimism for Whitaker’s Hall of Fame case.

The Detroit Tigers officially go 6-22 in the month of May.
They scored 0-1 runs in 29% of those games.
Tigers have lost 21 games that they were leading at some point.
No other team has more than 18.MLB average is 11.9.

This weekend the Tigers played 4 different hitters with a sub .500 OPS
Jahmai Jones (.498 OPS), Zack Short (.484), Zach McKinstry (.457),
Jake Rogers (.436). Some of them were even used as pinch hitters!!!!
(For context a .500 OPS ranks 160th in baseball).

The most disappointing thing about these Detroit Tigers can't be found in the stats.
This is the most disappointing Detroit Tigers team in decades, not just because they failed but by how they failed us.
