Tigers reinstate Ty Madden from injured list, option struggling reliever to Toledo.
The Detroit Tigers reinstated right-handed pitcher Ty Madden from the injured list to start Monday’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.
It will be Madden’s first start of the season and second of his career. He has typically pitched as a bulk reliever following an opener.
To create an active roster spot for Madden, right-hander Ricky Vanasco was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

Tigers ride home-run barrage to edge Rays: 'That's not sustainable.
No such thing as a bad win. Especially not coming off the month like the Tigers' endured in May.
But this is not the preferred path.
"We got away with it tonight," manager AJ Hinch said. "But that's not sustainable."
The Tigers did start the month of June off with a bang. They slugged five home runs Monday night and scored more than they had in any game since April 16. They built leads of 6-0, 8-2 and 10-5, but had to hang for dear life to secure a 10-9 win over the Tampa Bay Rays and snap a four-game losing streak in the first of three at Tropicana Field.

The summer of our discontent.
Frankly, the Tigers' freefall in 2026 doesn't really surprise me. Certainly not more than their playoff appearances in 2024-25 did.

June 2 in Tigers and mlb history:

1891: Charles 'Old Hoss' Radbourn of the Cincinnati Reds wins his career 300th game by beating the Boston Beaneaters at South End Grounds, 10 - 8. Radbourn, who will finish 488 of the 502 games he started, will end his 11-year career this season with 309 victories.

1915: At the Polo Grounds, Babe Ruth and the well-traveled Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees, 7 - 1. It is the last stop on a 29-day road trip for the Red Sox. Ruth allows five hits and hits his second career home run, a three-run shot off Jack Warhop in the 2nd inning. After his homer, Ruth receives two intentional walks. He ends up kicking the bench and breaking his toe, sidelining him for two weeks.

1925: 21-year-old Lou Gehrig starts a game for the New York Yankees when regular first baseman Wally Pipp is hit in the head during batting practice and complains of a headache - in fact a concussion. Gehrig collects three hits in five at-bats, helping the Yankees to an 8 - 5 victory over the Washington Senators. Gehrig will go on to play in a major league record 2,130 consecutive games, a record since broken by Cal Ripken with a streak of 2,632.

1925: White Sox come back from 15-5 to tie the game, but Ty Cobb hits a walk-off home run for the 16-15 win.

1933: The Detroit Tigers traded Whit Wyatt to the Chicago White Sox for Vic Frazier.

1935: Babe Ruth of the Boston Braves announces his retirement from baseball. Struggling with a .181 batting average at the time, he retires with 714 home runs, by far the most in major league history. Ruth will gain election to the Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class next year.

1941: Lou Gehrig dies of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at the age of 37 in New York. From that time on, the illness will be known primarily as "Lou Gehrig's Disease". Gehrig saw his major league record of 2,130 consecutive games played end because of the disease. It was on this day exactly 16 years ago that he broke into the Yankees' starting line-up.

1942: Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox enlists as a Naval Aviator. Williams will finish the season with his team, as will many other players who enlisted or await the draft, which moves slowly despite the early discouragements of the war.
Other American League regulars of 1941 enlisted in the military service include Johnny Berardino, Sam Chapman, Bob Feller, Joe Grace, Buddy Lewis, Pat Mullin, Johnny Rigney, Johnny Sturm and Cecil Travis.

1950: George Kell of the Detroit Tigers hits for the cycle in the 16 - 5 second-game sweep of a doubleheader with the Philadelphia Athletics. The Tigers win the opener, 8 - 2, behind the pitching of Ted Gray and home runs by Vic Wertz and Hoot Evers. Wertz has five runs batted in in the opener, and two more in the second game.

1952: The Detroit Tigers signed Johnny Hopp as a free agent.

1958: The Baltimore Orioles purchased Lou Sleater from the Detroit Tigers.

1961: Tigers 2 - Twins 0. Al Kaline homers and finishes 2-for-4. Rocky Colavito also goes deep for the Tigers. Jim Bunning pitches a 4-hit complete game. The Tigers are 30-16, up 2 games in the AL.

1967: The Detroit Tigers released Johnny Klippstein.

2005: The New York Yankees are swept by the team with the worst record in the majors (16-37), falling 5 - 2 to the Kansas City Royals for their first five-game losing streak in more than two years. Kansas City pitchers allow just six runs in the series. It is the third time in their storied history the Yankees have been swept in three games by the team with the worst record in the major leagues. The other times were in 2000, by the Detroit Tigers, and 1937 by the Philadelphia Athletics. The Royals had gone 78 series without sweeping anyone, the longest drought in the majors since the Phillies went 79 series without a sweep in 1996 and 1997.

2010: After retiring the first 26 batters of the game, Tiger pitcher Armando Galarraga coaxes Jason Donald of the Indians to hit a groundball to first base. Galarraga takes the throw in time to retire Donald but first base umpire Jim Joyce rules the runner safe. As a result, the Tiger righty loses a perfect game. After the game, Joyce admits his mistake and the next day he and Galarraga meet at home plate in a sign of sportsmanship.

2010: Ken Griffey Jr. announces his retirement after 22 seasons in the major leagues. Hitting only .184 in part-time duty for the Mariners, he retires with 630 career home runs and six seasons of 40 or more homers.
Most of his career was spent with Seattle and the Cincinnati Reds.

2017: Miguel Cabrera becomes the 39th major leaguer to reach 1,000th extra-base hits.

2017: Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers records his 2,000th career strikeout, the victim being Jonathan Villar, one of 14 K's on the night for Kershaw. He is the third fastest pitcher to the mark, needing 1,837 2/3 innings, after only Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson. Max Scherzer is about to catch him, however, as he only needs 19 Ks to reach the mark while having pitched 100 fewer innings than Clayton.
The Dodgers win the game, 2 - 1, in 12 innings, while recording a team-record 26 strikeouts and both teams combine for a National League record 42 whiffs.
Cody Bellinger homers in the top of the 12th for Los Angeles, while winner Kenley Jansen has now struck out 36 batters without issuing a single walk this year, a major league record.

2018: Jacob deGrom matches a career high set just two weeks earlier by racking up 13 strikeouts in 7 innings in a start against the Cubs, but the NL ERA leader has to settle for another no-decision as the game is decided in 14 innings. Seven relievers add another 11 strikeouts to give the Mets 24,
2 shy of the all-time mark for an extra-inning game, but it's the Cubs who break through with 6 runs in the top of the 14th, highlighted by Albert Almora's two-run double off Buddy Baumann, to win, 7 - 1. Luke Farrell pitches 5 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

2025: Kerry Carpenter leads the Tigers to a 13 - 1 win over the White Sox with the first three-homer game of his career.

MLBPA interim executive director Bruce Meyer says that the players would actually be taking a $500 million paycut if they accepted MLB's salary cap proposal, and reiterated that they will never agree to a salary cap.

I posted here last week and listed Milwaukee first among targets for a Skubal deal…for whatever reason a lot of Brew Crew mentions came out today from various places (including Milwaukee) Saying it again…and will likely repeat it. MIL has some terrific looking bats in the org. They won’t get Jesus Made….but any two from Lara, Pena or Fischer plus some spare parts would suit me. Detroit should pay down a solid chunk of the remaining money to get the Brewers to make this happen. The Cubs make sense too. Obviously the Dodgers will likely be in it.

Tigers demote Hao-Yu Lee – not Zack Short – as Gleyber Torres returns.
The Detroit Tigers made a controversial roster move.
Second baseman Gleyber Torres returned Tuesday, June 2, after missing the past 27 games while recovering from a left oblique strain, forcing a 26-man roster move to activate him.
The Tigers optioned infielder Hao-Yu Lee to Triple-A Toledo.
In doing so, the Tigers kept shortstop Zack Short.
Are You kidding me?? But in reality they are both bad.

"He's going to be back," manager A.J. Hinch said of Lee before Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, facing left-hander Steven Matz. "I don't know when, but I expect him to learn from this and be more comfortable the next time he gets his next opportunity."
