That was the last time owners formally proposed a salary cap until last week, when they responded to the MLBPA's opening proposal with a sweeping overhaul of the sport's economic structure. In it, MLB called for a firm salary cap of $245.3 million with a hard floor of $171.2 million.

1906: Unable to shake the effects of diphtheria contracted in the spring a frustrated Christy Mathewson throws a rare tantrum after giving up 4 runs to the Phils on 2 hits and 6 walks in the first inning and umpire Bill Klem in turn throws him out of the game. Hooks Wiltse relieves and picks up a victory as New York rallies to win 9 - 6.
1906: Bill Coughlin is the second Tiger within a month to steal second base third base and home in a game; he does this in the 7th inning against Washington during a 13 - 4 romp. Pitcher Bill Donovan did it on May 7th. Washington ties the game at 4 apiece but the Tigers score 9 in the last 2 innings to win. Charley O'Leary has a homer for Detroit.
Ty Cobb would later accomplish the feat 4 times.
1915: Ty Cobb steals home in the 9th inning of 3 - 0 Detroit win the only steal of home that late in a game in his career. Yankee pitcher Ray Caldwell is so angry at the safe call he throws his mitt in the air and is promptly ejected by umpire Silk O'Loughlin. It is Cobb's second steal of home while Caldwell is on the mound (the first was on May 12th? 1911).
1920: In St. Louis the Cardinals beat the Cubs 5 - 1 as Grover Alexander loses after 11 wins. Bill Doak is the winner and Rogers Hornsby leads the Cards' offense with 2 triples over the left fielder's head. After the game Alexander calls Hornsby "the greatest hitter I've ever had to face. I have tried to fool him every way possible but it just cannot be done." Alex will be 27-14 for the 5th-place Cubs and his 1.91 ERA will be the only one in the league under 2.00.
1925: With a speedy triple, the 275th of his career, the Tigers' Ty Cobb became the first player in MLB history to record 1,000 extra-base hits 100 years ago today.
1929: Former Red Sox owner Harry Frazee dies. Frazee is forever remembered as the man who sold the Babe to the Yankees.
1935: Dizzy Dean annoyed by what he perceives as poor fielding behind him berates his teammates in the dugout in full view of the fans and writers. Rip Collins and Joe Medwick start arguing back and Frank Frisch and Pepper Martin step in before any fights start. Dean shows his frustration by lobbing the ball in to Pittsburgh batters and finally leaves in the 7th to a smattering of boos with the Cardinals down 9 - 3. They score a pair to lose 9 - 5.
1936: The Tigers score 10 runs in the 3rd and 6 in the 5th en route to a 18 - 9 thrashing of the A's. Philadelphia scores 6 in the 9th but still comes up a bit short. Mickey Cochrane belts an inside-the-park grand slam in the 3rd and collapses after running it out and is replaced. Manager Cochrane will not be in the lineup as a player until July 15. Elden Auker goes the distance for Detroit and might have had a shutout except for 4 errors. The A's misplay 6.

1938: Martin Dihigo strikes out a Mexican League-record 22 batters in a 13-inning game for the Veracruz Eagle against the Tigres de Comintra.
1940: The St. Louis Cardinals play their first night game at Sportsman's Park, against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
1940: Tigers Hank Greenberg out at home in 8-6 loss to A's.
1944: The Detroit Tigers released Chief Hogsett.
1950: Ernie Banks makes his professional debut with the Kansas City Monarchs, going 3 for 7 in a doubleheader against the Memphis Red Sox.

A former infielder whose marriage was celebrated at home plate on a minor league diamond, Zimmer also coached and managed for many years. As a senior adviser to the Tampa Bay Rays, he was still listed as a member of the coaching staff and was never away from the game he loved.

The rule, adopted before the 2020 season but not implemented until this year due to the upheavals caused by the coronavirus pandemic, states that a team cannot use a position player on the mound unless there is a difference of six or more runs between the two teams. Roberts is thus forced to use a real pitcher, Evan Phillips, to pitch the final inning. In spite of the rule, the practice of using such "mystery pitchers" is continuing undiminished, with teams even resorting to them when they have built a huge lead late in the game, in order to rest their bullpens, something that was completely unseen before the decade started.

2009: The Giants beat the Nationals, 5 - 1, in the first half of a doubleheader. Randy Johnson allows two hits and one run in six innings to win his 300th game in the major leagues. He is the first pitcher since Tom Seaver in 1985 to join the 300 win club on his first try and the second-oldest, after Phil Niekro. This milestone comes on the 10th anniversary of his 150th career win, and 20th anniverary of his 5th career win.
2013: The Kansas City Royals selected Quintin Berry off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.
2014: Baseball mourns the death of a true baseball lifer, Don Zimmer, who passes away at 83. A former infielder whose marriage was celebrated at home plate on a minor league diamond, Zimmer also coached and managed for many years. As a senior adviser to the Tampa Bay Rays, he was still listed as a member of the coaching staff and was never away from the game he loved.
2015: In his only career appearance, with the Tigers down 6 runs in the 9th, Daniel Fields hits a double to start a 4-run 9th inning Tigers rally, before they fall to the A's 7-5.
2016: Tigers beat the White Sox 11-8 in Chicago. Detroit takes the lead for good on J.D. Martinez's 2-run home run. Mike Pelfrey gets the win, Chris Sale takes the loss.
2017: Tigers win on a 3-run walk-off home run by Justin Upton and beat the white sox 7 - 4.
2018: In the amateur draft, Auburn University P Casey Mize is selected first overall, by the Detroit Tigers.
2018: In a doubleheader split with the Tigers, the Yankees' huge asshole Aaron Judge sets a record by striking out 8 times, including five times in the nitecap. The twin bill is played on what was supposed to be an off day for both teams, to make up games wiped out by foul weather in April.
2019: The Detroit Tigers drafted Ryan Kreidler in the 4th round of the 2019 amateur draft. Player signed June 19, 2019.

2022: The rule preventing position players from pitching in a close game is invoked for the first time when Crew chief C.B. Bucknor objects to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts calling on OF Zach McKinstry to pitch the 9th inning against the Mets with his team trailing, 9 - 4. The rule, adopted before the 2020 season but not implemented until this year due to the upheavals caused by the coronavirus pandemic, states that a team cannot use a position player on the mound unless there is a difference of six or more runs between the two teams. Roberts is thus forced to use a real pitcher, Evan Phillips, to pitch the final inning. In spite of the rule, the practice of using such "mystery pitchers" is continuing undiminished, with teams even resorting to them when they have built a huge lead late in the game, in order to rest their bullpens, something that was completely unseen before the decade started.
2023: The Detroit Tigers signed Bryan Sammons as a free agent.

The formula is simple when healthy: Gleyber Torres (.396 OBP) and Kevin McGonigle (.390 OBP) at the top of the order gives the Tigers opportunities to drive runners in. While Torres was out, the players filling those top-of-order spots managed just a .268 OBP.
