Kevin McGonigle, Tigers walk off Mariners to end home series drought.
As crazy as it is to say on June 7, that was a critical walk-off win for the Tigers on Sunday.
Rookie Kevin McGonigle ripped a two-out, two-run single off closer Andres Munoz and the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners, 5-4, at Comerica Park, ending a four home series losing streak.
The thing is, the Tigers don’t have time for losing streaks. The hole they dug in May is too deep. They went into the finale against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday with a 26-39 record, 10.5 games behind Central Division-leading Cleveland and 5.5 games out of the final wild-card spot with nine teams ahead of them.

It ended on McGonigle's walk-off two-run single.
In the sixth inning, Jahmai Jones – pinch-hitting for Colt Keith against left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer – flew out to strand the bases loaded. In the seventh, Gleyber Torres struck out swinging against left-handed reliever Gabe Speier to strand a runner on third base.

I’ve got 5 new hot topics that presented themselves over the past week. Decide which one you find most interesting and start the discussion.

Can the stunningly good Kevin McGonigle beat Murakami for Rookie of the Year -- and gain for the Tigers a bonus first-round pick?
McGonigle showed again Sunday how historical is his status already as a Tigers hitter, all while handling shifts at shortstop. But there is storybook magic playing out in Chicago: Munetaka Murakami.
Tigers Intelligence Report w/Lynn Henning

Final line for Tarik Skubal Sunday: Tarik Skubal 5 innings: 55 pitches, 44 for strikes, 2 H, 6 strikeouts. Velocity was at 97,99. He looks good to go back to Detroit.

I don’t think Kevin McGonigle is getting enough love. He’s a 21 year old that won the starting job in Spring Training literally just by forcing the hand of the organization. That was NOT the plan. And now because the Tigers season hasn’t gone to plan we are talking more about that than the fact that there’s this 21 year old kid that’s going to be an All-Star putting up elite numbers while being the Tigers best player and playing every day. Kevin McGonigle is a star and I’m happy he’s a Detroit Tiger for a long time to come.
Ben Verlander

ICYMI: The Cece saga!! She was the star of the show yesterday. Days like these are the best. Thanks for bringing our Tigers some good luck, Cece!!

Tarik Skubal underwent elbow surgery May 6. One month and one day later, he threw five scoreless innings on 54 pitches and punched out six at High-A. Maybe Skubal is just that guy, but if nanoscope technology halves the return time from bone-chip injuries, what an advancement.

Options for the Tigers to replace Jahmai Jones.
It’s time to re-work the bench and stop wasting a roster spot on a guy who can’t do the one thing he’s here to do.

An educated guess how Tigers will reintegrate Skubal, Mize, Verlander.
This still could go a bunch of different ways, but the decision point is upon us.
Well, it’s upon manager AJ Hinch, pitching coach Chris Fetter and president Scott Harris, probably not in that exact order.
By the end of this week, the Tigers are going to start integrating three of their top line starting pitchers back into the rotation, which is going to force at least one productive pitcher out of the rotation.

Here's what Tigers ace Tarik Skubal said after Sunday's rehab start.
When Tarik Skubal found out he needed elbow surgery in early May, the initial timeline for his return for months, not weeks. But just a month later, he seems ready to rejoin the Tigers rotation.
OK, now what?
That was the pressing question for Tigers ace Tarik Skubal on Sunday afternoon, after he finished his first — and possibly only — rehab start as he works his way back, at warp speed it seems, from left elbow surgery.
"That's a good question that I'm not gonna answer," Skubal said with a hint of a smirk after throwing five innings of two-hit baseball for the High-A West Michigan Whitecaps at LMCU Ballpark. "There's a plan in place. I need to wake up and feel good tomorrow (Monday) and have a good week of work, and then we'll make that decision when we need to make it.
