ALLEN PARK -- You saw it in the preseason, and again in the Detroit Lions' opening-week win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coach Jim Schwartz wants everyone to know, you'll can expect to see the no-huddle offense a lot more this season.
"It's a big part of our offense, and it will be a part of our game plan every single week," Schwartz said. "How much we use it will depend on a lot of different things in the game. But it's always a part of what we do. We have the skill to be able to work it, and we have a quarterback that can get us in good plays and execute it."
The Lions are still getting used to picking up the pace, working on it regularly in practice. Quarterback Matthew Stafford feels good about the early results.
"Obviously we're getting better at it," Stafford said. "It's something you practice, then you go out there in the games, and you've got to make it work. We've done a great job getting a lot of reps out there in games of fast-paced offense. It's working of us."
Running back Jahvid Best likes how the no-huddle allows the Lions to limit the effectiveness of opposing defenses who won't have the time to make quick substitutions, particularly along the defensive line.
"It's hard for defenses to keep up with our tempo," Best said. "Their playbooks get a little smaller and we've got our whole playbook when we go at a fast pace."
While the Lions players expect no-huddle to be incorporated weekly, when it will be utilized will be determined during the course of the game.
"About none of it is scripted," Stafford said. "Coach will go when he wants to go, slow down when he wants to slow down. We're ready for it at all times during the games."
Clearly opponents better we ready for it at all times as well.
