He was already the betting favorite going into the game. Can't imagine he hurt his odds with that game lol

Hey Ron
I never knew this and I go to baseball reference all the time.
I was wondering what Kaline did in his major league debut and google said he was a late game defensive replacement for
Jim Delsing in Cf ( June 25th 1953) and flew out in his only plate appearance that game in the 9th. What didn’t know is wore #25 in 1953 and switched to his #6 next season. Tigers were bad in 1953 and
They lost 5-2.
Hey Bob,
So Kaline went into that first game 06/25/1953 as a defensive replacement in CF. He went to bat leading off the 9th inning and said he was a little scared his first big league at bat, against a veteran pitcher by the name of Harry Byrd and he flew out to CF.
Byrd would become a Tiger in 1957. Harry Byrd Stats, Height, Weight, Position, Rookie Status & More | Baseball-Reference.com

He got his first ML hit 07/08/1953 off a pitcher by the name of Luis Aloma.

His scored his first run as a pinch runner for Walt Dropo 07/21/1953.

He got the uniform number 6 at the end of the 1953 season when Pat Mullin a Tigers from 1940 to 1953 retired. Pat Mullin Stats, Height, Weight, Position, Rookie Status & More | Baseball-Reference.com
Kaline asked him for the uniform number 6 because Kaline's favorite ball player was Stan Musial, another famous number 6.
